RIP Pi - Sun Conure 02/06/11 - 09/10/11
For the past two days Pi's been doing something kind of odd.

I don't know if its a warning or a plea or what. Like, okay so she never bites me. Even when she's annoyed at me. She'll scream at me like a blue jay when I do something she doesn't approve of and she'll lunge but not actually make contact. So I know what those things mean.

She doesn't like to step up. She loves to be on my shoulder or touching me in general but if I try to get her to step up, she'll rock herself backwards on her perch to avoid actually stepping onto my hand. The moment I turn my back though, she'll hop onto my back or she'll fly across the room and let me scoop her up with my open palm. This is also normal for her.

The weird new thing she's been doing is this ... I'll be scratching her head and petting her wings and she'll position herself so her entire body is under my hand. Then she'll push her head against my palm or push her beak against my palm. Then she kind of rolls over not quite onto her back and she'll tuck one leg up against her belly but she'll have her toes stretched out.

I've offered her my fingers to see if she wants to grab or step up but when I do that she makes this offended squawking sound and fluffs up until I start scratching her head again. Then the whole thing starts over. I can't figure out what it means or what she wants when she does it. Does anyone else have a clue?

My bird actually does the same thing, I'd love to know if this means something as well.

I so love when they do that. I think it's safe to say it's a play thing. I lay my babies on their backs in the palm of my hand & tickle them all over. Funny little things will easily go off to sleep if i keep doing it. I also means that they are trusting you.

Sounds like she just trusts you enough to let herself be in the 'vulnerable' positions with you, probably expecting scritches or cuddles whilst she's there!

My sennie does a little indigent "HEY I WANTED CUDDLES!" when I try and do something else when he's done similar to what your Pi does, but my sennie goes all on his back usually :)
