So I was in the living room responding to a post on this forum (go figure). When I hear unusual bird noises coming from my bird's room. So I went to investigate
I found my 11 month old DYHA "Lambeau" with her poor hear stuck between a toy's wooden bars!!!! It scared me to death. She was struggling to free herself and I didn't want her to break her neck trying so hard. I calmly talked to her while still acting fast and all I could do was grab the wood "dowels" in my hand and break them to free her neck!!! Thank God it worked! It was like not hearing your kids in the other room and you know they're up to no good. I could just tell the noises coming from her cage weren't her "normal" clowning around noises. I'm so glad I was home. No more toys with bars/ dowels where a head could potentially get stuck in. I didn't think it was a dangerous toy, and it's one of her old ones (been rotated out and in a few times) I always inspect her toys and observe her the first time I give her a new "toy" not a foraging or shredder toy. I mean a toy that she more physically interacts with. WOW, what a scare. She seems fine talking away and muttering to herself again. I didn't take her out right away I let her settle down then I took her out gave her some love and a treat. She seems back to herself.

How scary! What kind of toy was it? Do you have a picture? I'm not sure what kind of toy you're talking about, but I'd certainly like to steer clear!

Glad Lambeau is alright!

Thanks !

Well I've since destroyed it. It was a 4 sided piece of wood with three wooden dowels in the center and each dowel had three toys on it. It remind me of a baby's toy. The toys they can just spin around and around. I broke it up and I'll use the toy pieces to make some homemade toys!

what a scary situation. Could you find a pic on the internet and public it on this forum so that we know what not to bay?

That is so scary! I am glad she is ok and that it all turned out well.

Scary! That's something I'm concerned about when I get my parrot. Not sure how to for sure identify the dangerous toys! :/ I'm sure I'll learn, but still! Glad everything is okay!

Wow! I'm glad you were home to help her out! Sassy's cage came with some hanging toys, I left them in it for her. About 2 days ago, she had shredded some of 1 of them. It was a part of the toy that almost looked like a bottle brush, if you can imagine. This rope had a section of bright yellow, then a section of bright red, bottle brush looking pieces of, what seemed to be plastic material. Once it was deconstructed, on the bottom of her cage, she started pulling it up to her perch and chewing on it!

I watched her closely, never seeing anything like this before, and it looked like it was getting stuck in her throat! She started to, what looked like, gag, and began putting her toenail into her mouth and scrape the roof of her beak! I intervened at this point and pulled all the shredded material out of her cage, foot and mouth. This is another toy I would not recommend.

Thanks !

OMG! that's Kazi's very favorite cage toy. In fact, I realized I need to replace it because he finally chewed through a dowel and spilled the pieces on the floor. I wasn't going to buy another one, though, just make one because it's so simple and I could add more stuff and levels. I'll have to check the spacing. I'm usually on top of stuff like that, so I hope I didn't overlook something. Yikes.

I evaluate choking hazards and pinch points first, then I look to see what it's made of, by who, and if there's any danger or possibility of any injury should something come loose. I'm pretty picky about what I'll let him have toywise, but after this thread I'm a bit worried I'm not being picky enough!

Thanks a million "Lizardsmells" for posting the pic of the dangerous toy! I appreciate that as well as everyone I'm sure. That's the EXACT toy. My baby girl loved it too.
