Pazu - Green Cheek Conure - Hatch Date ~27 September 2014~
I noticed yesturday but put it off as being my imagination but I noticed it today too, Pazu seems to have odd smelling breathe. It's not foul smelling, but his breathe didn't smell before (or i didn't notice).
I made a new batch of chop last weekend (with more veg in it than I have done previously), lots of broccoli and bell peppers, and I gave his bowl a sniff and it smells a bit like that but... I don't know, warmer is guess?
I'm overly sensitive to some bad smells (don't ask why) and bad breathe is one of them (yet I'm fine with all sorts of odd and bad farm smells) so I'm putting this here first to see if I'm overreacting.

I gave Pazu some fruit with some fruit juice and the smell seemed to stop/highly reduce so I'll do that again tomorrow (and maybe later). So maybe his new chop is a bit fresher than the last? My boyfriend didn't notice a smell but it was after I gave him some fruit juice.

Does this seem conerning? Wierd as it sounds, when he's cuddling up to my face and neck I like smelling him (the smell of warm feathers damn it!) and I've not noticed anthing till now but I don't think to smell his breathe.

I know when in doubt go to a vet and that bad breathe means bacteria but I don't know if this is bad breathe or chop breathe.
What does bad breathe mean for a bird? Racid food? sour? eggy?

Pazu is othewise healthy and active, eating fine, not over or under weight, poop is all as normal as all his poops (though watery after the fruit and juice).

P.S. I think this probably should have gone into the General Health Care section, sorry.

Bumping this, would be nice to hear what some people have to say on this.

Occasionally Kiwi's breath reeks. Many times, it's after eating leafy greens or broccoli, but sometimes after my hubby feeds him table food. I usually 'remedy' it with a anise star, which freshens his breath and is good for him:)

I thought fruit and some juice would be nice and give him a bit of acidity to cut the smell. I did put alot more broccolli (and raw chopped baby spinach leaves) in his chop (more than last time).
So as long as this doesn't hold then it's not unusual then I guess?

Kyo's breath smells a bit after eating broccoli. Maybe that was the culprit?

Thanks guys, didn't know broccoli could cause bad breathe but it would explain why his breathe didn't smell foul (foul smelling is meant to be a bacterial issue and a cause for a vet visit) but I'll keep a nose on him for the next few days just in case.

Since they don't have much saliva, it could be food smells. I once fed a parrot a piece of garlic flavored pasta, and it lingered for days!

Yes, broccoli makes their breath bad. So will a lot of 'green' vegetables. Unfortunately for us, broccoli happens to be one of Kiwi's favorite foods (and he's a big kisser, even with rank breath!):52:

Yup! Sgt. Pepper has bad breath when she eats broccoli. It's one of her favorites too. Smelly!! Her poop smells too!

Score two for cruciferous veggies!
