Snakes and Birds...Bad Combo?

You cant go wrong with them.. They are some of my favorite snake people out there..

There are a lot of rehomes available in the Everglades...

While living in Panama i saw more parrots/birds eaten by Boas then any other predator. They love to hunt birds in and under the fruit trees. They say they also hunt roost trees by finding the droppings . That's why parrots don't roost in the same trees every night. (IMO a Boa and a bird is a bad mix)

You have got to be kidding right? All the polls, hooraying you have been doing on here about birds and which bird and now you've decided on a snake? You sound just like my daughter hahahahahahahahahah. Get a snake and house them in the same room with your birds and your birds will not be long for this world. No matter how secure or how expensive your cage will be, human error always overrides common sense.

You MUST have missed the thread I posted about a snake trying it's best to break through a window and get to my birds while they were sitting with me at the computer.

Let's just say, when my son bought a ball python home (his home not ours) his mom promised she would never visit his house. Personally, you want a snake, it's your call; however, as one other entry stated, that bird gets a good view of the snake and the bird will enter a whole new period if its life ... one of terror.

Another propblem you will encounter with snakes that you will not with birds ... snakes continue to grow ... Depending on the type of snake you buy, it might be legal to own, now. But, down the road you might have to get a special permit to keep it, or you might lose it. That Ball Python of my son's ... when it it 8 feet in length, it went bye bye. He was facng a potential fine and confiscation for having it in Illinois. He had quite a bit of a problem finding it a licensed home. Zoos won't take them, because they usually already have them and too many others are coming their way.

Me ... I think they make great boots!

My outlook on your situaton is this, you brought the bird into your home first. Your first responsibility becomes that bird. Any other pet, or pets being considered, should be first dtermined what effect the new pet MIGHT have on the previous pet, or pets.

Actually they don't break bones, every time an animal expands it's body to breath out, the snake tightens. And after a while, the animal cannot expand anymore and dies of asphyxiation. They aren't "breaking bones" :)

Actually Ball pythons reach a maximum of 4-5 ft. So that either wasn't a ball or you were exaggerating :)

Yikes! What kind of snake was it?

I'm so not a fan of snakes. I dont mind them at the zoo, etc, where I can admire thier uniqueness. My ex got one when we were married, a *ball python. The first time it escaped out of its enclosure, and it bit me because I was trying to get it back in to its enclosure, that was it, snake gone. Come to think of it, it was only a couple more years and hubby was gone too. Now he can have all the snakes he wants. :D :D :D :30:

Edited: not a boa but rather a *ball python.

hahahahahahahahaha, that's what I call throwing the baby out with the bath water. I was joking with my wife years ago about getting a snake, she said pack your bags so they will be ready when the snake shows up.

There was an incident a few years ago in Apopka, about 15 miles south of me where a young couple owned snakes and had a young child. The snake got loose one night and the next morning, they found the snake a Boa I believe still wrapped around their child's lifeless body.

I had Mac in his travel cage yesterday hanging from the back door over hang while I was in the back yard. I heard something drop from a near by tree onto the wood fence which was two feet from me. I looked over and there was a three foot black snake. It seems the snake was in the tree trying to figure a way to get to Mac and fell out of the tree. When it happened, it cut about two years off of my life. I don't mind snakes, I just don't want to wear one either.

You guys and gals are too funny!

I know with certainty my husband would have MY bags packed if I were to bring a snake home. He hates them, with a passion. I like them, but I just don't think certain species, particularly those growing over 4-5 feet belong in someone's home. If I'm not mistaken, certain boas continue growing throughout their lives.

When we lived in Oklahoma we had TONS of snakes. My husband's hobby was to count how many he could get with the weedwhacker before he'd cut the grass, so MY hobby was how many I could collect and relocate BEFORE he'd start weedwhacking. :54: ...it was all good until a 6' Rattlesnake made its way into our yard, and my oldest son was only 4 at the time. Thank God our Golden Retriever alerted me! No, I didn't relocate that one.

A snake and a bird isn't a good combination , but you might make it work. . Though the snake might sense a avian animal in the house and will try and get to it . Locks are the best thing , I wouldn't keep it on the same floor as your fid. Lock the tank , lock the door, put a de drafter underneath the door so the snake can't squeeze underneath , lock the window if you have a window in your fids room . It's like keeping your fids way from a master parrot burgler . This is the first time I've heard of this , there are alarms in case your snake gets out . I always find it better to overestimate a pet than underestimate .I respect your descision , I think that if you take all the precautions it could work .Though one thing I worry about is that the snake might smell the bird on you and try to attack you , sorry if I'm
Wrong , im not exactly the snake expert

I have nothing against reptiles and can not say much that has already been said. Some reptiles get big and will out grow an enclosure (especially true for constrictor snakes, and large lizards). If you do get this snake put its enclosure in the basement (if you have one). Remember in the wild boas and raptors are the main predators to birds.

Yes I weighed out risks, We have a large enclosure and everything already bought, (vision), alarms locks etc. It will be in the basement! Boas aren't large snakes compared to some of them...Retics, Burms, Green 'Condas, Amethystine Pythons, Indians, African Rocks...I wouldn't dream of any of these potential 15 footers. :52: I'll stick with 10 feet thank you very much LOL :54:

I cant really comment, i love (non venemous) snakes and wish it was possible for me to keep one but alas... we dont have any snakes in New Zealand at all... :(

I don't see an issue with keeping a snake and birds as long as you're careful and have common sense (don't have them out together, keep both cages locked when in cages, etc). I have several snakes and they show zero interest in getting out to get my other pets (cats, dogs, and previously ferrets and rodents). Now I could see a bird tampering with latches so I would go for key locked enclosures like so:
Mine are like this. The middle lock is always locked so even if the side latches were opened, there's no way a bird is getting in or snake getting out without the key.

For a beginner snake, I'd go for:
Corn/Rat/King Snake
Ball Python
Kenyan Sand Boa
Rosy Boa
Irian Jaya Carpet Python
Hognose (keep in mind that these tiny snakes are very mildy venomous but unable to harm a human)
Common Boa Constrictor (if you want something bigger that's very mellow and hardy)

And for the record, ball pythons RARELY reach 5ft. Even my biggest female is just shy of the 4ft mark.
