Snakes and Birds...Bad Combo?

Thanks! BCIs are now going to be illegal here anymore...:/ ...so we had a change in plans. Now were looking for a FWC, woma, or a Jungle Carpet. I do have some experience so I'm sure I'll do fine :)

im a bit late to the topic, but I have boht a snake and a bird and they are fine. cooper is in the same room with the snake every day since his atom is in my room. my snake has never gotten into "feeding mode" when cooper is in the room. and they have locks for glass aquariums/terrariums so they cant get out. my snake hasn't gotten out in 9 years because I spent a whole 6 dollars on some locks. as long as you are a bit careful, and I mean just don't take them out at the same time, its fine. btw, I hope to be getting a jungle carpet python soon!!! they are so pretty! love them! good luck!

Can't go wrong with a Carpet Python. They're wonderful snakes. My Irian Jaya isn't keen on handling but that's because I rarely handle her. Doesn't bite though.

She's a very fast snake. It's so neat to watch her move and climb.

Wow Beautiful IJ Carpet! I like mrgoogls' post aswell, showing that keeping them in the same room CAN be done, but I won't risk it (well depends on the species...NEVER an arboreal in same room, maybe a hognose or a sand boa)

I could only afford a linoleum snake. Do you get multiple rooms with your carpet python?

I'd stay away from FWCs as they can get quite big and stay relatively thin. Depending on your enclosure restrictions you should go for something relaticely heavily bodied (BCI, Burm, Royal etc). I'm not sure on the laws across the water. Are there any banned species and what are you looking for in a snake? I keep mine in seperste rooms with a locked door in between. Snakes are indeed escape artists.

Actually they don't break bones, every time an animal expands it's body to breath out, the snake tightens. And after a while, the animal cannot expand anymore and dies of asphyxiation. They aren't "breaking bones" :)

Funny!

I didn't write the original poem, I just altered it. I understand the "constriction" process, it's just not as funny as grinding their bones!

Actually Ball pythons reach a maximum of 4-5 ft. So that either wasn't a ball or you were exaggerating :)

Then I would guess that I was wrong about the breed, because I wasn't exaggerating about the length. Actually, I can't guarantee it was even a python, it might have been a boa. I never got that close to it, LOL. All I can say is, after having it for many years, he had to give it up because it had exceeded the "legal" limit.

You have got to be kidding right? All the polls, hooraying you have been doing on here about birds and which bird and now you've decided on a snake? You sound just like my daughter hahahahahahahahahah. Get a snake and house them in the same room with your birds and your birds will not be long for this world. No matter how secure or how expensive your cage will be, human error always overrides common sense.

You MUST have missed the thread I posted about a snake trying it's best to break through a window and get to my birds while they were sitting with me at the computer.

Yikes! What kind of snake was it?

I'm so not a fan of snakes. I dont mind them at the zoo, etc, where I can admire thier uniqueness. My ex got one when we were married, a boa. The first time it escaped out of its enclosure, and it bit me because I was trying to get it back in to its enclosure, that was it, snake gone. Come to think of it, it was only a couple more years and hubby was gone too. Now he can have all the snakes he wants. :D :D :D :30:

hahahahahahahahaha, that's what I call throwing the baby out with the bath water. I was joking with my wife years ago about getting a snake, she said pack your bags so they will be ready when the snake shows up.

There was an incident a few years ago in Apopka, about 15 miles south of me where a young couple owned snakes and had a young child. The snake got loose one night and the next morning, they found the snake a Boa I believe still wrapped around their child's lifeless body.

I had Mac in his travel cage yesterday hanging from the back door over hang while I was in the back yard. I heard something drop from a near by tree onto the wood fence which was two feet from me. I looked over and there was a three foot black snake. It seems the snake was in the tree trying to figure a way to get to Mac and fell out of the tree. When it happened, it cut about two years off of my life. I don't mind snakes, I just don't want to wear one either.

I'm pretty sure Mac didn't want to wear one either! O_o

I cant really comment, i love (non venemous) snakes and wish it was possible for me to keep one but alas... we dont have any snakes in New Zealand at all... :(

I could be happy in New Zealand! LOL

Sorry, nothing else to say, snakes scare the bejeebers out of me, any size, any type. But I can't help staring at them when I get the chance, they mesmerize me.....I believe they hypnotize you if given the chance LOL.......

Ha ha. So far a snake has not hypnotized me. However as an adult I see how creepy Kaa is [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1ILPl5FQaM]Trust in Me (English)- Jungle Book - YouTube[/ame]

This topic gives me the chills....I try not to look in here as I'm supposed to go through threads...I think I'll leave it for someone else to go through....snakes really creeps me out....lol

I am an enormous snake fan and had one most of my life, until I got married that is (husband has a HUGE phobia). When I owned a python and a sun conure I kept them on opposite ends of the house on separate floors so that should an escape occur the chance of an encounter was as slim as possible. It is possible to have both but do not under estimate your snakes ability to escape and to search out your bird who probably smells delicious to it! Good Luck! :)

I have owned the same Ball Python for 24 years. I have also had birds for that entire time as well. My python doesn't have the slightest interest in a bird. It would probably strike and release a bird if one attacked her, but that's about it. Most of my birds completely ignore the snake as well, except for Cookie. She does this very strange display around her. Sorry for the poor quality of this video, but this is what Cookie does when she sees Erica the snake: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVMetN7Arlc"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVMetN7Arlc[/ame]

However, to answer the original question, it is best to keep pets apart when there is potential for disaster. This is no different. Snakes are stupid and unpredictable. Birds are much smarter, and just as unpredictable. There is probably a greater chance that the bird will injure the snake than the other way around. Keep them apart.
