Hey guys,

recently I have started considering the option of getting a bigger parrot. Nothing will most likely be of it because of space conditions (I really want my birds to have everything the best possible so if I cannot provide enough room for a bigger bird I won't be getting it in the first place), but I am intrigued at what you guys would suggest as the best option of bird for a first time big parrot owner?

I have had a budgie and now I have 2 lovebirds (housed in an approx. 70cm tall x 70cm wide x50cm deep cage with ventures outside as much as possible when I am home), which is definitely not the same as owning a bigger parrot :)

Do big parrots get along well with smaller ones or not? Which would be the friendliest one and the easiest one to introduce me to the big parrot world?

As I said, if I can't have the best conditions I will not be acquiring one at all, there is a lot of things to discuss and prepare before getting one :)

Also, any smaller birds (maybe a bit bigger than lovebirds) that would be good friends with my current birds?

And how do birds react to new ones of their species? I was considering maybe getting another 1-2 lovebirds but I am unsure how these two would handle them? :) Thanks for all the help!:rainbow1:

there is no sure bet on ANY breed... strange things happen. My BFA adores my conure but hated a cockatiel. IF u get a larger bird do be careful with the little ones

Great questions, and thanks for thinking of the potential birds in addition to your desires!

Birds are similar to people in that it is hard to predict how they will get along. Of course with people we can pre qualify them by age, demographics, interest, etc. There is *never* a guarantee two birds will get along regardless of species, age, or sex. I've seen some odd couples and family members of a species that hate each other.

One aspect to consider is the need to quarantine a new bird as a health precaution. 30 days is generally the accepted time. Once in the safe zone, there are many techniques to introduce.

I am not familiar with Lovebirds, but many members have extensive experience and can give advice!

WHy a bigger bird? ASk yourself that question , honestly.

Bigger birds ( a cockatiel or conures and larger ) require more time, the bigger the bird, the more time and not just cleaning up. More socializing with you and family. And that means every day , not just once in a while. Love birds can be such great companions, with some work.

Wrench13, I have always wanted a bigger parrot :) I know the work you need to put into them, and they are well worth it!

Scott, yes, I will have to look into quarantine, true, that part I forgot all about! But I need to do this with all birds I'd bring home anyway.

Notdumasilook thank you :)

IMHO whatever you choose to add to your flock needs to get on with your existing Lovies. I'll leave you to research that one, update on how you get on, be interested :-)

Good for you for reaching out for advice and thoughts instead of just plunging ahead based on your hopes!
