Stormy has a bare patch that's growing with each molt

So my almost 3-year-old budgie, Stormy, has a small bald patch above his cere that has been growing noticeably with each molt. It's like he molts out the feathers and they never grow in again. Could it be mites? Either way, he's going to the vet this Friday, and it doesn't seem to be bothering him. I can't really get close enough to get a picture. Any input helps!

This can be related to respiratory infection
It could, but it started before he got the RI. That's why it's a bit confusing.

likely the ri was going on longer than before you noticed. As can be subtle and they hide illness
Very good point. I think that's very likely.
