Hi everyone

Trying to help my partners mother find out about what's going on with her bird,

He's older than 2 years, and suddenly the end of his tail, around his beak, and his head feathers are turning a pinky colour - his head feathers are also no longer standing tall and proud they are sagged over and look to have something caked up on them.

We have been researching and unable to find anything other than pinfeathers but they are supposed to be when they are still quite young.

I can't get a proper look at what's going on with the tail, but pin feathers come through with every moult and would look pinkish in a bird with pale feathers as they're still being nourished by blood-flow, so that's what my feeling is around the feathers on his head. I'd leave the shorter ones on his face alone, but are you able to give him a gentle scratch and maybe remove some of the "caking" from his long crest feathers? One of my 'tiels has had a bunch of them on his crest lately too!

I'm not seeing too much wrong with the tail, there is a bit of a pinkish tinge but I'm not sure if that's what your concern is. Is there a chance there may be a red or pink toy or something that he's been rubbing himself against? Perhaps some of the dye has rubbed onto him?

There's nothing in there that he could have rubbed on yes it's the pink that is concerning but I'll pass on what you've said

I'm sorry I haven't been able to help you any further. I take it nobody has noticed or reported any active bleeding, which might have discoloured the feathers originally but been largely washed away in the meantime if the bird has had a bath or two?
