Hi All,

I have noticed a lot of people wondering about Suns. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Suns. But they are noisy (and I think two crank up the level by 10). Really noisy. In the video you will see a smaller black cage, that is my GCC. She is really quiet, even for a GCC from what I gather.

Make sure you turn your volume up high and remember, this is just less than two minutes at a normally quiet time of the day. So, don't base your opinion on the lack of volume, it is there. But try to listen to the shrillness of the shrieks, this is what bugs out most people. It can literally make your ears ring. I live on multiple acreage, and I can actually hear them in the back pasture (about 2 acres away) and they are in the house.

I am going to try to catch them when they are really excited. I'll post that as well.

Most of our friends think we are nuts to live with the noise. However, it really isn't the birds' problem, as we bought them and they are completely bonded to me, so they are here to stay (they are, after all, my fids). I have gotten to the point where my life is about a handful of loved ones and my animals. So if friends can't tolerate the noise, we just meet elsewhere. We have really learned to "live with the noise", but we are lucky that we are not in an apartment, have small children, or are overly sensitive to the noise.

You are very brave! I love suns personalities but I couldn't live with them. My macaws rarely get very loud, my amazons can start at day break even if they have been covered for the night and that can be head wrecking but bearable. Suns are so high pitched it goes straight to my brain. As you say you love them and that is all that counts.

You said it all! Suns produce a pitch like no other bird I've met. I would think an owner with some degree of high-frequency hearing loss would be the ideal match!! :D

That is actually a little (sad) funny, as I have moderate hearing loss (argggg..I'm only in my 40s) and it is usually to higher pitches! My hubby doesn't though, but he has a higher threshold to chaos.

I guess my Sun must be rather atypical, as he is the quietest bird I own. While he can be loud, he is not noisy, in that he doesn't carry on just for the hell of it. And honestly, his screech isn't any more piercing or annoying than my Cockatiel's. He will belt out a few banshee shrieks to warn us if someone is appoaching the house, or when he's excited that we've returned home, but for the most part he either hangs out quietly with one of us or amuses himself.

Then there is my Meyer's, which is supposed to be a quiet species, who Never. Shuts. Up. I'm not kidding, he even babbles while he's taking a nap. So, you just never know.

My Yellow Wing Parrot ( Brotogeris or bee bee parrot) was noisy as heck and had a constant stream of loud BEEPs or else have a temper tantrum, running back and forth on the bottom of the cage screaming his signature call. We became inured to it, most of the time. But I;ve heard some sunny's that beat the band for piercing notes.

My sun is pretty quiet! I'm lucky. I bet it part of it is that she is the only bird in the house. What age did your sun start saying "OK"? I'm trying to figure what age sun's start to talk.

Hi, "Okay" is the first word they said, between 1-2. They also say:

What are you doin?
Where you goin?
Hi!
What?
What is that?

but, good old "okay" is their favorite. Kind of a funny story. When they started talking is about when they got really loud. So, we were always saying "okay, enough", "okay, you can stop now", or just "okay". So, I work from home and I got up early one morning (like 4 am) and started working. While, you know how time flies when you are on the computer, and dawn arrived without me knowing it. Pretty soon, I start hearing "okay, okay, OKAY!". It sounded like staticky radio so I started to wonder where the heck the noise was coming from. I was shocked when I finally located it and figured out it was my Suns. Good think we weren't cursing at them, if they were going to pick a favorite word it could have been al whole lot worse!

I think a LOT of it depends on the environment.

If you have more than one bird, they'll be more vocal than one alone. If you have a lot of people going in and out, or a lot of people in- the birds are going to be noisy.

I actually had a cockatiel, Peaches, who was the noisiest bird I ever owned.

Skittles is more loud than he is noisy. I can deal with the noise. I can't, however, deal with complete quiet. That bothers me even more than the noise.

The only time Skittles noise gets to me is when it is prolonged over a length of time. It doesn't happen very often and when it does, I deal with it. My biggest complaint is when he 'sounds the alarm', his pitch is unbearable- but once the 'threat' has been neutralized, he simmers down.

Skittles can actually go hours without making a screech. He makes 'froggy noises' and 'kissy noises' more than anything else.

If I didn't live in an apartment, to be honest, I'd have more suns and more birds. It's too quiet with just him. I have a VERY high tolerance for bird noise.

Complete quiet is really. really. scary. in my house. It usually means somebody is up to something that they don't want mom to know about.
