I wouldn't muck round with the pellets. The more attention you pay to them, the more attention Sunny will give to wondering whether they're OK or not. Just put a few where he can get them and leave him to eat them. Once he's eating them fairly happily, give him a quarter pellets and three quarters of his normal diet. Over a week or a fortnight, change the proportions until he's eating mostly pellets.
The other thing you can do is to toss the pellets where other birds will find them. My old Dominic only started eating pellets when he saw the Alexandrines enjoying them. He chased them (the Beaks) away and hoed into the pellets for himself!
Where did you get Sunny's pellets from? I use Vetafarm because they're the better of the two possible kinds I can find locally, but our petshop only carries the coloured ones. I'd rather give my flock undyed ones if possible.
Yes, they're expensive, aren't they? I nearly died first time I bought any! I have a funny feeling that a lot of our bird stuff is rather more expensive than it is in the US and elsewhere.
I give Rosetta a bit more seed than I give the Beaks because native Australian parrots eat a rather more seed in the wild. She *really* enjoys fresh grass seed heads and my son has planted a little patch of wheat for the birds to enjoy when it sets seed.
This arvo, I was sitting out on the deck enjoying the nice afternoon sun with my husband. We were chatting and sipping coffee and I had my back to the Beaks' cage with my two plaits hanging down my back. All of a sudden, I felt a great YANK on my head and hubby erupted with laughter. Barney had seized hold of the end of my plait, dragged it through the bars and was swinging on it! Madge was hell-bent on getting hold of the other one. LOLOLOLOL! I *do* enjoy having birds with huge personalities!
