I was working on target training with Tiki today. It's a little unconventional since he's blind. Instead of having him actually touch a target, I just have him go to where I tap. I guess it's almost like a cross between target and recall training without flight. I got some adorable pictures today, although all pictures of Tiki are adorable if you ask me.

I think his tail, with the band of light yellow at the tips is so cute, I had to grab a picture.

Lovely pics of tiki there.I love the name.I had a fiery shoulder conure called tiki who sadly got eaten by my friends dog

Love the pics! Tiki is beautiful!

How has the "echo location" target training been going?

He's been doing really good with it. We started trying to introduce an obstacle today, just a piece of pvc laying in his path. He wanted to go over it, but was nervous. I think he'll go over it in time, once he figures out there is a stable surface on the other side.

Great work! He's adorable.

Was he born blind? He's so lucky to have you teaching him, he's going to have a wonderful life :)

He wasn't born blind, as far as we can tell. The vet said he's probably been blind for a long time, though. He is 26. Vet said his blindness is consistent with either a nutritional deficiency when he was younger or some sort of head trauma.

Poor guy. Glad he has you!

Awesome. I'm sure that's exciting for him. A new experience.
Wanna give you a high five. This is really awesome.

Tiki is lovely, really cute. How has the Pretty Chicken been with Tiki?

I wonder if specific senses are heightened when one is diminished in parrots? Hard to make parallels with humans; AFAIK birds have fairly moderate taste and smell. Perhaps hearing or tactile use of the beak may be enhanced?

Love the pics, Tiki is one special and fortunate Ekkie!!

Undeniably heartwarming. Well done.

When she has been out at the same time as him, she wants to eat him, like she has with any other bird she's ever been near. She is not a bird bird. She loves people, but any other living thing should be eliminated if you ask her.

What a handsome bird! Love that you adapted the game to his abilities! How old is he?

He is 26 years old, as far as I know. Could be off a couple of years either way, I suppose.
