Parrots
None, temporarily
Today I brought home my new feathered friend. I've been searching for a while and hadn't found the right parrot until a few days ago at a local pet store. He was comfortable with me right away and I decided not to look any further, I found the right parrot at last. He (pending a DNA test) is just 4 months old and I haven't chosen a name yet (so far it's just "little parrot"). He made himself at home right away in the nice new cage I recently got. Within a few minutes of moving in he discovered the food dish and started eating. He explored the cage for a while then it was time for a nap. He's been eating a seed mix at the store, only about 30% pellets, so we'll be working on improving his diet and introducing fresh foods.

I haven't disclosed what kind of parrot he is in case anyone wants to try their hand at guessing. A couple hints first: In size he's somewhere between a parrotlet and a scarlet macaw (not very helpful I know, but I don't want to make it too easy) :giggle:. He's not exactly the same as my previous parrots (yellow crowned Amazon, Congo African grey and standard green Quaker). Now take a guess if you care to.

I'll post a picture within the next few days, if he'll sit still long enough and not attack my camera.

I’m not even going to hazard a guess, but whoever he is he’s one lucky baby to have been adopted by you, congratulations!!! 💖💖💖

I'll throw in a guess. Another amazon? Maybe a yellow nape or a blue front? Amazing birds and sooooo much personality. I love them. And ekkies... And greys... And......... :)
Looking forward to the reveal!

Thanks, everyone!

DonnaBudgie and AprilRobin guessed right. My new feathered friend is a cinnamon green cheeked conure. Lots of disappointments and frustration over the last few months as I searched for a new parrot to fill the empty space left by QP Ralph's passing. Not many parrots of any kind available close enough to where I live, either for adoption or for sale, and I ran across a few scam artists along the way. I'm not sure who chose whom, but when the little GCC was brought out to meet me, he climbed right up my arm and onto my shoulder like he was staking a claim. :D Once at home, there was no hesitation about exploring his new cage and he already seems to be right at home here. We're still working on choosing a permanent name, so it's "Little Parrot" temporarily. And here is Little Parrot:

Oh @cnyguy, he is absolutely GORGEOUS!! 😍 😍 😍 I'm so happy for the two of you and I wish you a long and happy life full of love together!!

LOL! I love greenies! So spunky and full of birdy chaos! I totally hear you about hunting for breeders and rescues and finding scammers on the way. I went hunting for a Timneh grey and was terrified of being scammed. I ended up with a Congo Grey - my first, but not my first parrot - that I had to have shipped from out of province. YEEEEEEK!

I vote for calling Little Parrot 'Lippy'. Green cheeks can be lippy, in their ability to talk, and it's short for Little Parrot!

Little Parrot had a busy day today, trying out some parrot toys and demonstrating that he has a louder voice than he's been using. He got scared by a squirrel in the tree just outside our window and did an alarm call. Not quite as loud or persistent as the QP version, but good enough to get your attention.

We're working on introducing some vegetables and some fruit too. He'll try almost anything I offer by hand, but even ones he seems to like get ignored when I put them in his food dish. With the exception of lima beans so far; those he ate. I know from past experience that introducing new foods takes lots of patience and repetition. He definitely didn't like banana.

Choosing a name is something else we're working on. I've tried a few different ones but he hasn't seemed enthusiastic about any of them so far. Little Parrot is descriptive enough but he deserves better.

Here's a picture I took this morning when he was exploring the basket containing things he can chew up.

Now there's a happy baby with a busy beak!! Hmmmmmmmm you know something, that just happens to fit in beautifully with this month's Photo Of The Month Contest, just sayin' ;)

June 2025 Photo Of The Month Contest!!!

Little Parrot is cute for now! I call all my babies Baby Bird even though they have real names, too. When I see a bird outside I call them Baby Bird, too, because all birds were once Baby Birds!
