It's big news in my state right now -- close to 1,000 animals were rescued from a house in Vinton, Iowa yesterday. There were also 4 kids living in the home, and not to mention the live animals were living with dead ones, too.

JUST HORRIBLE. They found rabbits, rats, mice, hedgehogs, chinchillas, turtles, fish, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and a bally python. The poor babies. I also heard that there were some that were getting DIY surgery performed on them. Just churns my stomach.

And get this... the owner is actually defending their right to keep all those animals, even the dead ones!! JUST SICK. I am absolutely disgusted.

Disgusting

Another article, if anyone want to read

However.... I will say that I am so thankful that these animals were all rescued. I hope the owner gets their karma and enjoys being behind bars, surely they will end up there.

yep

people just snap, they get more and more and more and more animals thinking it's normal and the animals are happy and well cared for despite them sleeping next to dead siblings. I will guarantee if she got a psychiatric evaluation they would find something wrong with her. It's the only explanation I can give to someone like that.

On the upside the budgies in that video look really active and quite healthy all things considered, hopefully the rest of the animals make it

Frightening. I'm glad the animals are now safe! Like LordTriggs has mentioned, it is obvious their owner needs help. I'm also concerned for the children...

Much of the time situations like that are an outgrowth of the hoarding individual's mental health issues left untreated. It's a tragedy for all involved.

I agree - extreme situations like that are usually a manifestation of mental illness.

Often triggered by a death of a loved one, or some other emotional trauma that goes unmanaged for years. Often animals are kept because of the emotional comfort they provide - and for some they're a distraction from pain, or to hold on to a memory of someone/something. They can't let go because they're frightened of the mental pain they might endure if they don't have *something*.

Lots of stories of that in Australia - it just gets away from people, particularly if the animals are not desexed (that's spayed/neutered for the rest of you folks). That's why there's a huge encouragement to get it done for companion animals when they're young. If you started with two desexed pets, they'll just stay that way. But two that aren't? litters and litters and litters later...

It's quite unfortunate that it got this way but I'm also glad it got discovered and taken care of. I also hope the people involved get the help they need, too.

Absolutely horrific, hard to conjure such hideous conditions. That the owner wants to get her animals back and carry on is delusional.
