There's a must-see event in August, the 17th I believe, a total solar eclipse. The sun will actually be eclipsed when it rises. The eclipse path begins at the Oregon coast, goes diagonally southeast. Paducah KY is on the centerline, and there are good websites where you can find the nearest place to see totality. I've only heard descriptions, so I want to see for myself. When I checked last summer, every hotel in Mitchell, OR had already been sold out for two years. I managed to get a room in a city about an hour south which isn't on the path, but it's driving distance. Especially if I get up at 2am. Not taking any chances. That's why I'm heading to Oregon instead of the much closer Paducah - the sky could be cloudy or rainy there, and eastern Oregon is almost guaranteed to be dry. I figure, if it does look like unseasonable weather I'll drive wherever I have to.
If you can find a way to get to the centerline, do it! If any members are lucky enough to live on the centerline, how much to sleep on your couch? Ha ha just kidding. Sort of. I do have a reasonably close spot and friends to go with so I'm good. Don't miss it! You'll see the white ring...the stars coming out...the shadow of the earth rushing toward you at 2000 miles an hour. Go, just find a way and go if you can, you might not have another chance.
