A yellow sided green cheek conure
I have a DNA sexed yellow sided green cheek conure, Rambo, that I have had since he was hatched. He turns 11 in August. He was hand-fed as a baby from Corbett Birds in St. Louis. I have debated over the decision to rehome him for three years now and I have done everything I could to avoid it, but I am at the end of my rope, and so is my husband. I have struggled with Rambo for about the last six years. I used to live much closer to my work and rarely ever needed to stay over 8 hours. Even when I changed to a better job with overtime four years ago, I was still only five minutes from home. I struggled with taking Rambo out regularly because my husband and I, dating at the time, lived in different towns and had to travel to see each other and get to know one another. He was even kind enough to keep Rambo at his house because we were together so often, on the weekends and it still didn't help with Rambo for time and attention. Two years ago, I got a better job, but it came with being on night-shift for the next several years, overtime and I spend two hours a day driving. We cannot move because our families are here, and I cannot turn away a job that will allow me to help my parents when they will need it down the road, or my future child. We are expecting in September, and even with my husband trying to allow Rambo time out of the cage it has not changed his attitude. He has cage aggression, screams frequently, and when he decides to bite, he does it with the intention to hurt. He is fine one moment, and drawing blood the next, and I've had it. I know all the warning signs, the problem is there sometimes aren't any. There are no options here about trying different methods, I have tried literally everything from shaking my hand so he would lose his balance, to cage time-out time, to sitting there and letting him remain clamped down and trying not to react so he wouldn't get the satisfaction from it. I can't do it any more, and his breeder has no one in her circle that is interested. He comes with a large flight cage, and a small vet-trip emergency cage. I had even bought a smaller "bedtime" cage to try to help with the cage aggression, that I can include for an additional amount or will sell it separately.

These photos are only two weeks old, showing he CAN be sweet and more like he used to be, when he feels like it. We are located in southeastern IL. I want him to go to someone who has a lot of experience with birds, someone who can hopefully get him back to the more cuddlebug he used to be and a happier life. He can be so wonderful when he's nice, this is just not a good situation for any of us any longer. He was not my first bird. My first was a parrotlet that couldn't be touched, that I got tamed down and sweet, and after him, a lovebird. I had both up until my mother in law at the time fell in love with them and wanted them to keep her company. The parrotlet had been mine but the lovebird was a rescue from a coworker's child who no longer wanted her that we had planned on finding a good home for anyway. I had decided though that I wanted something more, and that was when I got Rambo.

I am not sure if you have worked out anything with Rambo yet or what and I can understand wanting to select a new home for him and all, but if worse comes to worse, contact George at Illinois Parrot Rescue. I have known George for something like 15 years, he is not a hoarder and will be honest with everyone. I don't know if he has a spot open even, you would have to get that from him, but he is in Southern Illinois at least. I hope this helps you a little at least.

Not yet, unfortunately. I will look into that, thank you for the information!
