I have always worn necklaces, I love them, until today. I just had one of my baby lovebirds almost get herself choked on my chain. She was on my back, and somehow she got under my necklace, and then it got wrapped around her neck. I couldn't see her because she was behind me.
She was screeching in pain, I guess it was choking her. luckily my daughter was home and got her free.
I have now removed my necklace and won't wear one around any of my birds.
thank god it had a happy ending, rather than a sad one.:52:

My big birds chewed my gold necklace in half, one of them my mom had it made for me, a 24k gold necklace, she would be soooooooo mad if she found out why I'm not wearing it....lol.....I wear a thick heavy silver one now, they won't get tangled in that nor chew it in half....

I guess you would have to wear a fairly thick chain, I noticed you own the bigger birds.
my other lovebird had chewed the clasp on the same chain, and broke it. I just got it repaired, and put it on yesterday, maybe it was a sign that I shouldn't have been wearing it

Basil crushed a pair of gold stud earrings my daughter was wearing (they were mine from when I was a kid). I don't wear necklaces and have pretty much stopped wearing anything nice as he destroys whatever I am wearing with that hole-puncher of a beak. Glad your baby is okay. That must have been scary. Can we see new pictures?

Yes I wear pretty thick and strong necklace and bracelet both given to me by my boss as gifts. I can't wear fake stuff as I'm allergic to them. My macaw chews on it so you know it is pretty strong!

LOL that's too funny that I first sign on here and I see your post. I got to tell you that Tuukee has lost one of my hoop earrings and the back of of a stud lol, which he also deformed and later lost it (after I put it back as best i could). He "chews" on my thumb rings and my bracelets. I have to be quick when he's on my shoulder.

cdn bird lover, you made me laugh!!....a hole puncher beak is about the size of it....she is very good at undoing any clasp on my necklaces. my birds have been going in circles on my neck looking for my chain, it's kind of funny. I'll post a picture of my Halo, the little monkey, lol. pls. look at the budgie forum, I posted a very nice pic. of my female english budgie and her babies in the nesting box..awww.

MikeyTN, how thick is your chain??? it would have to be quite thick to stand those jaw crushers, lol.

Tuukee, so much for those earrings eh?, both my lovebirds always pull at mine, and it drives me up a wall, I'm afraid that they are going to get one in their mouth and choke on it....I wear the studs and they love them, but I love my ears more :-)

Wow! Glad you were able to untangle her. I guess I haven't ever thought about necklaces being a danger before, since I don't allow Kiwi on my shoulder where he could get a hold of one. I do allow one of my moms bird on my shoulder (a female DYH zon), and she doesn't bother my jewelry, but if I have my hair braided, she will grab the braid, take off the hair tie and unbraid it. She got really tangled once in my hair (which is past my waist) when I had this decorative hair clip in she tried to remove by grabbing it with her foot and beak (something against my hair being up? Lol) I was trying to remain calm with a terrified/pissed parrot dangling off the back of my head all knotted up in my hair. It was no fun for my mom removing her either. I wear my hair down or braided when I visit now!

If you do on dr foster and smith .com they have you necklaces which you can wear which a safe for birds to play with , it has a treat cup and everything . Though I think the same incident can occur

I can't wear studs anymore, Jax pulls them out in a split second. He does it so fast you don't feel a thing, it's only that I heard him chewing something that I noticed he'd done it.

I haven't worn any jewelry for many years... Having birds and working with intellectually disabled people, it's just too dangerous... for different reasons...

I wear 3 Necklaces, but Codie is not allowed on my shoulder, so this isn't a problem for me... I also wear many bracelets and Rings, but luckily, he has never bothered with any of them:)

LOL, It drives me nuts too, but he likes the shiny just like his mama! He's got great taste bc he only messes with my nice stuff. But like you said I'm very worried that he will choke. I just try to be quick; he still doesn't understand "No" yet. I don't punish him but I wait and watch while he's chewing apart my silver... and hope it's not too messed up ;)

jewelry, watches, glasses: no to all, I think ReaRea has killed 3 watches so far and I always take off my brand new one off when I have her. It's a really nice watch and heavy but she ain't getting this one!!! If its shiny they'll go after it....... I would hate to be wearing a ring if one of the GW's were to grab it, I imagine it could be pretty painful.

Scarlet loves playing with the little heart on my necklace, I don't have her on my shoulder ever so getting stuck in it isn't really likely. But she just chews on the heart and moves it around in her mouth, won't break it. I'm so used to letting her, the other day I was playing with Gilbert (my friends male Eclectus) I let him play with my necklace like I do Scarlet, then straight away, snapped it in half. Damn. I loved that thing. Lol

someone needs to make bird-proof jewellery, lol

I take all jewelery of when handling Mishka. He has a thing for gold (he has good taste) LoL
He once pulled a gold earing right out my ear, I had to fight with him to get it back.
