Hello,

I've got Alvin booked into the vets tomorrow, but his brother Alwyn has started making this noise, rarely but for the last 2 days. I've never heard it before and was wanting soem input. I have a very tiny carrier I could squeeze him into and take him with alvin potentially, i'd just like input on the noise, it sounds like some kind of cough/wheeze?

Oh really? That's a relief, I was abit concerned because he's never made that noise before in 20 years, and when hes been sneezing a bit more than usual recently and theres been a lot of clear fluid at times (I can feel it on me) but hes scratching his nose most of the time when he does this. He is a very fragile bird in terms of behaviour he hates hooman hands and he has a tendency to crash when flying. Infact he flew off shortly after this, luckily did not crash, i put his beak next to my ear, there may have been a slight wheeze but i'd expect that after the flight. So I don't really want to take him unless it is absolutely necessary.

He made the noise yesterday while eating toast for the first time, and then again when he was dreinking, so I was wondering if it was a dry throat. We've had one person here who does not have covid but has been coughing a lot, so i'm a bit on edge with them both, given alvin needs a vet visit again.

wheezing is also a huge indicator of something wrong
how long did he fly?
and i dont recomend toast for birds it can be very bad for them (except if its whole grain)

It's sourdough bread. When I say wheeze, it's nto really a wheeze slightly out of breath probably a 6-8 second fly and panic wher ehe landed.

The bread is a different bread from another bakers though as ours closed down, wondering if it could be an allergy?

Id still take him to a vet something is clearly wrong
Because of the liquid?

I'll try and convince the owner to let me take him with Alvin then... She doesn't like taking them to the vet for anything...

The liquid is clear and very thin

birds shouldnt predouce fluids when sneezing
this link might help u find a vet
and it has to be a certified avian vet since birds are very diffrent from dogs and cats

I've got an avian vet, not sure how good he is overall, i have been todl clear thin liquid can be perfectly normal. Infact when I described alvin having a large amount of fluid he said it might be the sign of an infection, where you and other peole i've seen online seem to be much more strong on it definitely is. Unfortunatley where I live he is the nearest one. and its an hour away or so away

its not normal at all
Yea see that's the thing i've been told if its only once or twice a day/every other day than it is normal and they produce it to clean their nasal pathway, but everyone online seems to be saying something else.

You do think the noise is normal right? I have a small carrier thats very small and a large one, he is going to have to go into the small one unfortunatley. I should be taking them both tomorow around 3 uk time. Thinking of getting Alwyn's bloods checked, it's expensive but i'm thinking it may be good to get it checked.

Alvin refused to drink anti biotics after drinking a tiny bit for a day and a half. He would drink everything but, so I need to try and get soem different anti biotics for him and get his nose cleared out again. I got a culture before but it came back negative even though it was clearly infected, but i'm thinking of getting another culture again for alvin.

That is good to hear, it's such a different noise for him it really had me concerned. I'm wondering if I should hodl off on the blood test, just get him registered with the vet and some anti biotics and then take him back if the discharge doesnt stop. I'd have to say whatever Alvin has Alwyn likely has, they are in seperate cages bu they share the same playground.

I won't hold back a blood test if I was in your place
Are you sure there are no other vets?
Its wired to hear that a blood test is expensive

Well I've got the money so I will get it done, yea we've looked around and he is the only avian specialist nearby the other one is a bit further and charges even more. Blood tests cost £90 for alvin. Culture is £50.

Yea probably a UK thing. It's why i'm a bit hesistant, I will do anything for these guys, but when you spend £50 on a culture test for a clear infection and then it comes back "normal" it really stings, what was the point. The anti biotics worked it was a textbook infection yet it was "normal". It's why i'm hesistant. I'm expecting a vet bill of around £300 tomorrow for the pair if I get blood checked on Alwyn and culture on Alvin. Alvin's bloods also came back "normal" yet hes had 3 infections in 12 months. I feel like something is being missed with these tests. The only response I get back is it's likely his "age" which doesn't seem right to me. I get their immune system is lower as they get older but it seems like a blanket reason.

I did find out that ther BSP drops I was using should have been discarded after 6 months, it doesn't say anything on the bottle about that so part of me is wondering if they've got something from the drops. I've had Alvin permanently only them since his last infection as it may be a vit a deficiency, which again vit a was not on the blood test result... So I'm nto even sure how conclusive this vet's bloodtests are.

Ill try another vet if I was in your place im really starting not to trust this one?
