Hey all!! My dream is becoming reality and hopefully within the next month I will have my little fid:)

So I have a question about what to feed in the morning and night. Due to the fact I have school, I have been told NOT to put fruit or vegetables in the morning as I won't be back until 4-5pm to clean it, but at night I would defiantly give them fruit and veges. So aswell as pellets on the morning, what would be another thing to give them that will not go off or expire by evening? Would a few nuts and dried fruit be ok or what? Thankyou for your time, I am so excited I can't sleep!!! No joke, and I keep having dreams about them... It's beyond obsession now:D:p::32:

Yep dried fruits and nuts will be fine for the morning. I leave early for work and leave pellets, seed and fruit & nut mix for during the day. In the afternoons, Bundii gets fruits and veggies and a little of whatever we are having for dinner provided it is birdie friendly. On weekends when I am home, I will give her some scrambled egg, toast or cereal for breaky.

Thankyou!! What dried fruit n nuts do you feed or recommend!? And I have school and am gone from 7am-4/5pm do you think he will be ok if I provide adequate toys, foraging treats and food for the day? Thankyou!!! Mcuh appreciated!!

Congratulations =D I know your excitement :P You will have to share pics when you get your Burdy home =D

You can feed small amounts of fruit and veges as soon as you get up in the morning if he likes them and he will dig in and then just remove them last thing before you leave. Then again when you get home.

Im sure he will be fine home alone while you are at school. You can leave the TV or radio on for him on a timer system if you like.

Oh and roudybush do a pellet and dried fruit/vege mix called California blend which might interest you as a morning feed =D

Those are roughly the same hours I am away for work. Your baby will be fine. Just make sure that you have plenty of toys for play and a variety of perches for comfortable perching. I never put a new toy in just before leaving the house. I always add them on the weekend when I am home to ensure that Bundii cannot get into any trouble.

I give Bundii a combination of almonds, walnuts (her favourite), pine nuts (second favourite), pistachio and pecans when I can. As for dries fruits, we go with apples, pomegranate, pear, apricot, sultanas, cranberries, blueberries, banana. I can also sometimes get dried and roasted coconut from the supermarket that she loves. Basically whatever you can get your hands on. Alex's are not usually fussy at all. Bundii will try anything once.

Everything in moderation is my motto for her foods.

Thank you so much everyone!! This really helped me a lot!! I really really appreciate it and when I get my little fid!! I'll post pics!! If I figure out how :/

Thanks again!!

Dried fruit with no sugar added is a good option. Also keep your eyes out for a used dehydrator, that way you can make your own dried fruit and veg (any kind your bird likes) so you don't have to worry about sugar or salt being added and can offer more variety:)

When both of us worked during the day, we always gave Kiwi fresh fruit about an hour before we left for work in the morning in a 3rd dish, and just took that dish out before leaving and left his dry food in the cage. Not sure if thats possible, but just a thought. Even a half hour is enough time for a bird to eat a good portion of fresh food, and you can always cut and prep the night before and store in the fridge overnight so you aren't rushed in the morning. If that doesn't work, just offer the fresh produce at night. Best of luck with your new buddy:D

Oh guys, have you tried the dried fruit mix from petfoodplus?

I get the dried mix when i do Fargo's pellet order.. and Fargo LOVES them.. They are soo great to put into foraging toys..

Tay have you decided which type of pellet brand you will get your fid? We don't have as many brands as America :( But you can get the good stuff like Harrisons, Zupreem, Roudybush and Vetafarm! :)

And did you get your cage? Did you end up getting the same as Fargo's?

and i also see you have already started making toys. I wish i was that good at making Fargo toys :p hahaha

Have you got any names picked out for your fid?

I finally had a free night so decided to come onto the forum :p

Congratulations, I know the excitement of waiting. Think you can't sleep now? Wait until his/her first night home! ;) Don't forget lots of pics when you get your new fid, we love pics.

I'm lucky our weather is generally cooler here in the UK so I only have to worry about fruit being out too long in the middle of summer.

Dried fruit is a good alternative, but most human grade dried fruit has extra sugar added to preserve it, as well as the naturally concentrated levels caused by drying. And most have sulphites added to keep the colors pretty. Kiwibird's suggestion of a dehydrator is perfect- you can feed a fab selection of dry or semi dry fruit and veg to prevent spoiling and attracting flies. I've just asked my dad to get me one for my birthday :)

Tay, I am so thrilled for you!
I agree with all the above posts about a morning feed for your new baby:)
Have you been thinking up names yet?
I can't wait to see your new fid, you are going to be an awesome parront!!

Hey Tabitha!! Yes I am mostly going to try vetafarm as that's what I have at my local bird shop, Trish said uses it with her Alex with no problems so I will try it :) and my cage is not the one like fargos as we don't have enough room for that one unless he lives outside, but we have a fox problem and 2 hypo dogs that would spook him :11: and I have picked a couple of names, I am hoping to get a male and have chosen 2 names for a boy, Rocko or Zoro :) and if I get a female I love the name Dakota! And Thankyou to everyone for helping me!! Thanks kiwibird for the idea of a dehydrator, I'll defs look into that!! And thanks bundii girl and lucy1 for all the useful info and Terry for the support!! Everyone here is so helpful and the information and knowledge that I have gained Is incredible. So Thankyou again!! I'll update everyone when something exciting happens :D:32:

I suppose it also depends on the temperature too. Here where I live it has been pretty "nice" weather, and not too hot yet. If it was hot in the house I'd not leave vegetables, but I do find that certain veggies (the ones that just dry up and don't rot) are fine all day in my climate. 5 hours? Sometimes waaaay longer if I'm stuck and can't get home until late. I find that if Raven only had an hour or two before we left the house, the veggies won't get eaten much at all during that time. He is a grazer. In the summer when it's hot, he just might not have 'as much' fresh foods depending on my schedule. With Robin, he doesn't eat veggies from a bowl, and is picky anyway, so in the morning when cutting Raven's veggies, I just hand Robin as large a sized piece of carrot or yams as he can hold, and he holds it in his little hand to eat.
