What's your dream bird?

I think this is something that is so important to consider. We just adopted Ava 3 weeks ago. We are already her third home, & she’s not yet 8 years old. My husband and I are both in our early forties, so she may very well outlive us or live beyond an age that we can properly care for her. Our daughter is a bird lover as well, & may become her caretaker if/when the time comes. In the event she doesn’t feel up to it, we plan to stipulate in our will that Ava goes to a chosen bird sanctuary, with a trust for her care, so she can live out her days without having to go to another home.
That sounds like a great plan. It’s really good that you’ve already figured it out. There are so many stories of birds who outlive their owners and end up in horrible situations, and it’s so common and so heartbreaking.

I agree. It’s not a decision we made lightly, & fully thought out our plans before we committed to adopting her. These special creatures deserve so much more than they often receive, & it’s incredibly sad.

I'm continuing the conversation about age. To those of you with longer-lived birds: how old are they, and how old were you when you got them? How do you ensure that they'll be okay if they happen to outlive you? Would you ever get a baby bird as an adult? I'm young and don't plan on getting a large bird soon, so I haven't considered any of these, but I'm curious about how you handle them.
I was a teenager in a bird-crazy household when I got my dream bird, a B&G macaw 50 years ago. I am the first and only owner of a wild-caught adult, so he is probably around 53-55, but who knows for sure? A gentleman does not reveal his age. 😜 We are both super healthy, so hoping for many more years together. I will be the eccentric 90 year old lady with a macaw perched on my walker. 🤣

It’s hard to imagine having another bird in this lifetime. I am spoiled with a gentle, loving and quiet bird. I tell my husband that he needs to appreciate the quiet. Very few macaws go many weeks without belting out a single squawk!

Amen

I'm actually glad she isn't weaned yet. It gives me time to prepare! I do wish it wasn't such a long drive to visit though. She makes the sweetest noises.

I think a lot of us have birds that we'd love to own in the future, so this is a thread where we can share what they are.

My dream birds are a Goffin's cockatoo, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo, a red-tailed black cockatoo, and a galah. I also want a military macaw and a blue-crowned conure. My ideal flock would consist mostly or only of cockatoos. Please share yours! :)
My dream bird is probably a... white bellied caique? There's already one that I might get by the end of this year from the bird store I volenteer at. I'd really love any type of bird. Probably a macaw or amazon, because I have bad allergies and CANNOT deal with big powderdown birds
