What is he doing?

I had thought it was hormone stuff, but hes only 2.5 so maybe too young for it to be that? He does this a lot, several times a day recently. I finally got a video of it, so decided to ask the experts!

Oh man, you're in REAL trouble now!

2.5 seems young, but that is almost certainly male mating behavior. Are you sure he's 2.5 or have you just had him 2.5 years? Reason I ask is it seems a little off the timescale of when an amazon in the northern hemisphere would be expected to hatch, but more in the order of 3-4 years would be pretty normal for the hormones to start kicking in. We call that the 'horny dance' (sometimes accompanied by attempts to hump stuff/hubby's head) and around here, it is BLATANTLY ignored! As in turn around and leave the room or very obviously look away/turn your back etc... Obviously you can't be upset at a bird for doing what comes naturally but ignoring it is the best way to let them know you aren't interested in what they're offering

Double check your age calculations! As stated above, most Amazons are hatched later in the Spring and some as late as the start of Summer. Some questionable breeders will try to double-up in a year.

Check what you are feeding that you are not providing mushy warm foods or high protein foods, which 'could' drive hormonal responses in Amazons, normally a bit older. Also, take care of where you are touching your (young) Amazon.

So, I just have a horny boy! I'm sure about his age. He came from a parrot shop about a mile away and one of their employees remembers when his previous owner got him. It was when she started working there and she helped hand feed him. I dont know his exact hatch date, but she thinks its right around June/July. So I guess he will be three in a couple of mos actually.

SB, Food, hmm, I'm probably not helping in that dept. He gets chop every morning. Its dehydrated and I rehydrate it with hot water so its warm and somewhat mushy. Its pretty typical chop, mostly veges, some fruit, quinoa, spices, oatmeal and some pasta. I guess I could use cold water if that would make a difference. Although thats how I have always fixed it and this silly dance has just started again recently.

I do ignore it when he does it. No response at all. I dont leave the room though, maybe I should try that. I am very careful where I touch him. I scratch his head and under his beak, but thats it. I probably touch him the most when I am putting his harness on, but I cant really avoid that. Oh, I do kiss the back of his neck or top of his head a lot when hes sitting on my arm. I dont want to lead him on, hes not my type even though I love him tons!

Well, at least I know what it is now. Hes been doing it for awhile, but it had pretty much stopped and then in the past couple of weeks it started up again.

The areas you are talking about are rarely an issue regarding developing a hormonal response. Mid-lower back, mid-lower bottom, mid to lower areas under-wings are the areas of most concern.

We have always used cold water, so I have no idea of what warm water would cause. Interesting.

I never touch those areas however, I did work on him letting me touch under his wings a bit during harness training. But at this point, I dont touch under his wings at all.

I'll switch him to cold water and see if he will still eat it! Hes a bit spoiled.

LOL...I laughed at his "dance" Even tho Amy is really "Amos" in the sex area,and "he" having been living with me for nearly thirty years,I have NEVER seen him do that "let's get it oonnnnn" dance!

How wonderful... yes, the little cactus is now a big, hormonal one!

The Rb does a similar little boogie on my shoulder, and if I shoo him, he often perches someplace high while ogling me and continuing, which my husband finds disgusting! High comedy to me!

SB, I was trying not to incriminate myself by only admitting hes a 'bit' spoiled, but the reality is, he is totally and completely spoiled rotten! He sorta demands it! LOL Those pics are on fb, so when I need to see them to remind me that I love my little turdbird, I can easily find them!

Hes well trained to step up on either a stick or my hand. I can also reach into his cage and he will happily step up. Hes really good that way. I have wondered if hes been mostly easy to train because hes young. Potty training is next now that the harness has been mastered!

I live alone so not really anyone else to socialize him to. I wish there was. Hes very attached to me and I am his person. He will reach out and bite people if they happen to walk too close to his tree. I have a couple of friends who give him a very wide berth when they walk past him these days. I'm starting to take him out on his harness more, but that wont help him to be nicer to other people. I'm kinda at a loss as to how to get him to be nice to other people. I do have people give him a treat when they are around, but it doesnt happen often enough to really make a difference

I started "him" out at a very early age..Amy was four months old whe he picked me to go home with,and at the time,I owned my own "Big Rig" and was actually planning on him being my "co-driver" and come along with me.
I took him out with me a couple times on one-day/local trips to see how he'd handle it all.
So when we stopped at truck stops to get lunch and/or fuel I took him out with me ( the sleeves on his arms were kept short) and he was introduced to lots of humans!
But it didn't take long for me to realize "where/how am I going to set up his house??" even though my truck had a sleeper berth,and back then a big truck was notoricaly know to be very..um...rough riding lol..and crap would end up everywhere,like food and water etc etc etc.
So that ended our plans for seeing the sites together
But because his face lit up,and his little beaky opened a bit,and his eyeballs danced in his head lol,i KNEW he was enjoying himself as he looked out the big wind shield and windows,I just kept taking him out in the four-wheeler instead and kept taking him to every place I went (weather allowing) and it has been a "most excellent" adventure!!
At the end of our day when we are out and about and I tell Amy it's time we go home sweety,he will sit on my shoulder,make soft/sweet/amazon noises in my ear,and GENTLY preen my hair,my beard,and SOFTLY beak my cheek!
I truly believe he is saying "thanks dad,for taking me out today,I love you too!" :60: :40:

I have a similar problem. My adult daughter did live here for 9 months, but she has minimal interest in my bird; but generally I live alone and I am Bumble’s person. Pet stores are great places to find people willing to help you socialize your bird, since everyone there has love for some animal. And Bumble LOVES to watch the fish!
