What made you choose the "less flashy" bird?

Parrots
Pineapple Green Cheek, Nekkid Senegal, Galah, LSC 'Too, Amazon and Conure (still to determine species)
Would love to hear your stories about falling in love with the birds people would consider less flashy than those that are vibrantly colored.

We have a Nekkid Senegal. She came from a less than stellar home and was/is a plucker. She's pretty sweet, but also a turd. When we saw her we said "who else is gonna adopt a Nekkid bird"? It's mainly chest and belly, with some tail feathers thrown in for good measure.

With me, part of it was price, part of it was that the species fit me to a 'T'. Vortex isn't as flashy as other parrot species color-wise, but she makes up for it in personality. She was also 800$ cheaper than what I wanted originally. I was impatient and fell for Vortex and her, then, unnamed brother. She's my little love bird, LOL. I wouldn't change anything in the past for her. She's perfect.

With us it was never about the flash or appearance. Amazons are basically green birds anyway. With them its all personality.

Grey's are grey. Kinda boring compared to scarlet and vibrant colors. But I love the intelligence and personality. Observe the near perfect disassembly. It took her a few hours to disassemble with care. Now if only I could reassemble.

I have budgies that are beautiful show-quality birds in the most stunning color mutations and I have ordinary "wild-type normal" budgies and they are ALL amazing, beautiful birds! Personality does go a long way!

Have you seen the new black faced Budgies? Very cool!

I've never seen one in person only in photos. They are adorable and would make a stunning addition to my small flock, but they're still very rare. I'm a member of the American Budgerigar Society and have gotten to know some exhibition breeders of "champion" type English Budgies. I asked one of them about the Blackface mutation and he told me that they aren't being bred for showing for some reason that didnt make complete sense. Something about that mutation making it harder to breed the quality of birds (size, shape and feather type) that show breeders are trying to achieve. I suspect that in time they will be seen more, probably mostly in Europe where most mutations are developed and become more available. I'd jump at the chance to get one.

I got my gray budgie, Charlie Chaplin, from a pet store and he seemed a little older than a lot of the other budgies with him. He was in a cage with some stunning pied and clear- wing budgies and I wondered if people had passed him by because he looked plain in comparison? I think he’s incredibly handsome and he has a super sweet, cheerful personality. I could tell he had a sweet, mellow personality even in the pet store and thought he would balance out the boisterous energy of the other budgie I got, Buster. Plus, I personally think Chaplin’s color is beautiful!

He is!

What do you do with your birds last night. Every New Year Eve and 4th celebration with a dim light on. I stay awake to monitor Nameliss. I don't want her to get scared or hurt. There's usually someone who shoots something off near the house after the celebration between 0130 and 0400. She accepts it. Those are the only two nights of the year I can play computer games all night. Provided the overall light is dim, volume so low speaker is next to my ear.
