What spices do you add to your birds food?

I just added some cinnamon to my gals apple slices!!!

Puck likes most spices. He'll even eat wasabi! I'm careful with wasabi though. One time he took a big mouthful. He kept throwing it up, and swallowing it, and throwing it up and swallowing it... until I took it out of his mouth...

If he sees me eating it, he'll eat it. Sometimes I add extra ceyenne pepper for him, since it's supposed to be good for him, and he likes it.

Cayenne, cinnamon, fresh garlic, nutmeg, tumeric, paprika, etc. I use them sparingly. Some do have healthful reasons to give them.

Cayenne pepper has clotting & pain relief properties. Use it on a scrape, you can use it to help w/a bleeding toenail, etc.

I put cayenne on my gcc's fruit, they go nuts over it. I also gave Sully a dried jalapeno pepper and he took a bath after two bites, too spicy for him apparently.lol.

I already give our rescue macaws garlic in with their fruit and veg. I also tried black onion seed and they seemed to like that.

I'm going to try paprika and coriander next.

I wouldn't add any spices to there food and i also wouldn't give them garlic or black onion seed garlic can cause kidney problems for your birds and black onion seeds I don't know the risk with these but I wouldn't chance it one bit

Agree about the garlic and onion. I recall recently reading (in Bird Talk I think) that garlic and onions should be avoided but I cannot recall why. I'll have to fish through my mags.

I did research on the net and discussed this with several local long term parrot keepers and experts before giving our birds anything.

The upshot was that small amounts of raw garlic given once a week were not felt to cause problems in the way onions might. Like anything else, it seems that it's all about moderation.

Black onion seed, despite its name, is no relation to the onion plant family at all and is closer to spices like cumin or fennel. Again, looking at what other experts say, these spices appear to be safe for birds.

I think that is one of the wonderful things about this forum. We all have the opportunity to give our input, share experience and knowledge but in the end we all get to make our own decisions. Thanks for the info concerning the black onion seed also!

I never thought of adding spices to Gizmo's food! When I first brought him home, I made a batch of 9 bean 'soup' which I froze inside ice trays. He isn't a big fan of it, and now I'm thinking that spices would have made a difference. It's probably too bland or something.

Are there any spices they shouldn't have? How about dried red peppers?

I always prefer green and fresh vegetables and fruits for my parrot. When i gives this kind of food it become very exiting for eating and also it is it's favorite food. I also prefer small ants and spiders for my parrot sometime its amazing.
