What’s the weirdest thing your bird has ever been mistaken for?

Someone once saw Crescent (my budgie, RIP) and asked if he was a guinea pig. Also, I volunteer at a zoo, and I’ve heard visitors mistake the hornbills for toucans, parrots, and pelicans. What weird things has your bird been mistaken for?

Consistently as a cat. I don't know why. In or out of carrier, she's mistaken for a cat. Once I was asked if that was a bird. Annoyed, I responded, 'no it's a cat.' My CAG on que meowed.

I don’t know what people think lovebirds are exactly, but I often would get questioning looks when I would refer to “my parrot” (this is before Ava). People who’ve known about Button for years would say, “You have a parrot?” Umm…yes? Button is a parrot. Then the lightbulb goes on.

They do that with Otto too! When I tell people he talks, they're like, "I thought only parrots talk?!?" I'm like "Budgies are parrots."

In CA, one elderly man left the vet office thinking he could teach his Canary to talk cause Otto did. He didn't understand Canaries are song birds not parrots, Otto is a Budgie and a parrot.

A lot of non-bird-owners think that "parrot" always refers to a Macaw, and "parakeet" always refers to a Budgie. They don't quite understand that many different species are in those categories. Granted, many large chain stores will call Budgies "parakeets" and sell products that describe them as parakeets.

Can I see the drawing? I think it would be very hard for someone to mistake a Bourke's for a turkey, even if it was poorly drawn lol.

I'd like to see your drawn picture too. I mistook a bald eagle rampant for a scrawny turkey. I am curious.

Not something my birds have been mistaken for but when I had to bring my newly hatched baby budgie Joey to work in her incubator every day to feed her she got a lot of visitors. Some people were shocked at what a newborn budgie looked like and called her "ugly"! Of course I thought she was perfectly beautiful blind naked and helpless! Over the next 30 days they watched her grow into a cute little baby budgie. No longer "ugly"!

That's cute. I don't think she looks like a turkey, but I guess a non-bird person might not be able to tell what she is.
