I first had a green cheek who flew away and broke my heart. The then rescued a blue crowned conure who passed away at 32. I will be moving into an apartment and need a bird not too noisy. My green cheeck squaked and squabled but was quiet. My blue crowned could get loud but still not anywhere near aamazon. I was wondering: Do you think a blue crown would make a good apartment bird?

Noise level is very dependent on the individual. Not suggesting one in your case, but our amazon happens to be a quiet boy who's lived in apartments with us since we got him 9 years ago. We've never had any complaints about him. In fact many of our neighbors past and present didn't realize we even had a bird until they saw him out with us. My moms amazon, on the other hand, is far too noisy to ever be a suitable apartment pet as she vocalizes (not screams) all the time. Both amazons, very different volume levels.

Since you rescued before, it may be a good idea to look into rescuing again and looking for an adult bird who's personality seems compatible with your lifestyle. With proper care, it is unlikely a mature adult bird who's known to be a quieter individual will suddenly start a screaming habit. I would keep an open mind to species, just have a general idea of what size bird you're looking for. There are many types of conures, but also several other species (caiques, poicephalus, larger parakeet species etc...) in that size-range who you may find an quiet individual you can't live without:)

I live in an apartment and own a sun conure which are normally NOT good apartment birds because of their high pitch. I'm in a unique situation so it works for me, but may very well not work for a lot of people- so I wouldn't off-hand recommend a sun.

I live in subsidized federal public housing (not a private landlord) which offers a lot more 'protection' and also Maine law makes it VERY difficult to evict someone for noise complaints (unless they are in the middle of the night).

I am home 95% of the time and when I am home, Skittles is out of his cage and I strongly believe that is why he is so quiet. He can go hours without screaming and when he does, redirection works for the most part. So like I said, my situation is VERY unique.

I don't know much about other conures, but I think green-cheeks might be a good start as far as conures go. Another bird that is perfect for apartment living is cockatiels, budgies as well. But I wouldn't recommend a sun (or any other aratinga conure cause they all have high pitches).

ultimately the Green Cheeks and other similar species such as pearly and black capped conures are as a umbrella term "suitable" for an apartment. I would say though that even these guys can make a racket if they want so if you have noise sensitive neighbours or poor sound insulation I would not recommend them. Also note that even though on the whole they're quiet they can easily develop bad habits and some are just plain noisier than the others and have odd noise times. MY previous conure for example would never do the morning or evening scream fest but if he became excited would be noisy.

On the upside with a bird they rarely make noise at night so you are lucky in that sense that most noise complaints are only taken into consideration when past a certain time (normally 11PM but places vary) or if the noise is constant. Go check out some rescues and find a conure you like who likes you and see what they're like is the best answer. Talk to the staff and find out why they were left there, naturally you may want to stick away from the ones given away for screaming. But even so you will need to make sure training is in place to avert screaming behaviours
