So it's actually super funny.... she has one of those giant wall toys and chews on it endlessly. She then puts the straws she pulls out in her tail feathers. I've seen birds do this before on like YouTube, but this is the weird part: she then goes to her favorite corner with a giant straw in her mouth. When she drops that one, she pulls one out of her feathers to chew! And so on! It's like she figured out how to carry her favorite thing to do around! Then she goes and gathers more straws and puts them in her tail feathers. I think this is some sort of nesting behavior... right? It's just super hilarious!

I actually looked this up. There's lots of theories out there. Nothing definite is pinpointed. If your avian friend is happy, enjoy.

I've seen videos of them making paper into long straps and stuffing them into their rump feathers above the tail. I've always wondered why and how they get the strips to stay there and not just fall out. Do they build nests with them? I think it's unique to lovebirds because I've never heard of other parrots doing it.

yes same! yeah it makes me feel super bad tho, bc in her first 3 years of life, she laid 13 eggs. it was terrifying. she pumped out like five in a week and that was so dangerous. She is a very broody bird and i feel so bad in not getting her a mate, but then i wont be able to bond with her if i get her a mate... so its funny but sad at the same time. All year around, she does a little mating dance if we get " too close to her back, and tail, etc." it's like what she lives for.... i feel bad😢

Oh, im very familiar with the problems with females laying eggs even without a mate! Don't get her a mate because your bond will be damaged and you will find yourself overrun with lovebirds! Make sure she gets a good liquid calcium supplement in her water (I like Calcivet), a complete diet, and lots of exercise. An overweight, out of shape, calcium deficient female bird is at risk for egg binding which is very painful and very often fatal without immediate avian vet attention.
