You just need something harder than pine, we use dragonwood and it holds up very well to zons/macaws.

It's Maple...Pine wouldn't stand for 10 minutes here! Chewing is his favourite thing, and he seems intent on destroying. I assumed all Amazons were like that, but maybe it's just Fred!!!

Nope, Bosley has chewed his down too, looking for new wood or a new playstand for him too

Have anyone tried eucalyptus? I use it for my cockatiels, it had lasted for months. And my alexandrine, Ozzie, has only destroyed a little bit within 4 weeks. So it should last Fred a while, I guess.

Try the dragonwood , it last for years with zons/macaws. I just cut a pick up load 2 days ago, need some ? I'll try and post some pictures later this PM.

Wow, Fred sure is a sawmill, isn't he? :D

I know you like making things, and thought perhaps you'd like to look at this one ;)

So I'm getting around to posting pics. That is a 6' tape measure and a 12oz drink bottle in the pics. These pieces are fresh cut and need to dry for about a month or so. The pic of two pieces are some left over older pieces that are already cured (dry). Most of this is cut into shorter section and used as bolt-on perches either for the inside or bolt-on to the out side of the cages. Most of these are about as large as i can legally find/cut. Smaller conure,Poi, tiel stuff is pretty easy to find but the big stuff like this is much rarer.

WOW Richard! You've been busy!!! Those are some FANTASTIC branches/wood. :D

They are indeed! I don't think Dragonwood is available here....

Have you tried manzanita? They are wonderful perches and I will grant you your bird will not chew it. I have mine four years and it has not one nick in it. Heck, we broke two drill bits trying to get the bowls fixed. The wood just smoked and burnt the drill bit. This is about the hardest wood I have ever seen. Judy eat herlself out of many perches before I got this one. I paid $500 for it, but it was well worth it. IN case you have not seen it, here is a pic. I cleaned it and sanded it every night as long as I was able. It needs cleaning now but I am too weak to do it. I cannot hold my arms up long enough to even brush my hair so my bird is getting ignored compared to normal treatment. She does not understand why she cannot sit on my shoulder anymore. I guess she thinks I have deserted her. I know when I got out of the hospital, she would not come to me for about two hours, and then she bit me. She was letting me know that she did not like me leaving for two weeks.

What do you do with all that wood? Do you make bird perches and sell them, or do you use it for something else. Just curious. It sure looks like some good hardwood. That is the way manzanita is. It is hard as a rock.
