Window A/C Unit Info

Hi all,

I took everyone’s advice on cooling my room, as I had a freon leak in my central A/C unit and bought a window unit.

I was curious if anyone had advice on potential dangers? I had to be very cautious about teflon and manufacturer’s coating on my portable heater, so I was wondering if there are any dangers with window units?

I researched the one I bought and it doesn’t list that any coatings are put on the unit, nor have I found any info about teflon being used on A/C units.

Any info would be helpful, and thank you in advance!!

I've never seen any of the bad coatings used in a/c units. I would run it at first with the windows open and the birds not present just to get the "new" smells out.

I think coatings are "only" dangerous when overheated and since AC units don't get hot I doubt there would ever be a problem.

There are components of a/c systems that do get hot

I thought overheating of cookware caused toxic fumes. Can new AC units in good working order get that hot in windows aren't safe?

I'm not saying they are a danger but I would take precautions especially with a new unit.
Space heaters, blow dryers, self cleaning ovens, etc. as well as cookware can be a problem

I'm 85-90% sure it would be fine to run right away. But is it worth the risk, especially when it's so easy to just leave the windows open for the first few hours?

Gonna be doing the exact same thing here before too long.
