I've been feeding my bird Zupreem for a few months now. So today I looked to see what was in Zupreem and in the ingredients it says they add zink oxide to there bird food. I thought zink was bad for birds.

Zinc is bad for humans too.

Zinc oxide is a purposeful food additive that would be FDA approved for uses in foods, which means it would have undergone very thorough testing. Zinc oxide is much different than elemental Zinc.

It's also in tiny amounts. I feed Zupreem, it seems to be one of the most palatable pellets and there's now such a wide variety to choose from.

my bird enjoyed zupreem too, and she suffered no nutritional imbalances. i liked to let her have different pelleted foods from time to time (from the zupreem to harrisons to the hot pepper harrisons and back to zupreem....)
She also liked nutriberries from time to time as a treat.

Makes sense there would be different types. I will have to pay attention to what I use. I take a cold pill that has more zinc and it seems to help shorten colds

I don't use supreme, even though they have great human grade ingredients they add sugar to the mix and it's not a true pellet

what is the "best" pellet. i was thinking of feeding roudybush. i would use harrisons but the closest plae that sells it is 2 hours away is roudybush good?


and the zinc oxide is fine. it is approved for use in foods.

Roudybush is very good, and they don't add sugar. My birds LOVE it. I am alternating every other day with Zupreem natural as well, not because I want to feed them extra sugar, but because I think it's good for them to eat two pellets in case one company goes under, or I can't get it, or whatever. I would feed Harrison's rather then Zupreem, but I don't want to deal with it's tendency to spoil quicker.

We've been feeding Harrison's and Zupreme since we brought the birds home many years ago. I found they wasted the Fruit Blend Zupreem, and they REALLY prefer the Harrison's. to the point of emptying their dishes to make sure there's no in there. So we ended up just feeding Harrison's.

We feed Roudybush to our guys, but our YNA was doing a combo of Roudybush and Zupreem from where we got him from. So for right know they are getting both. They seem to like to the Roudybush better.

When I first got Rome she had liver problems. For six months she was on a strict diet of nothing but pellets (i fed the fruit zupreem). Her liver problems were corrected and all of her other imblances returned to normal levels as well. I will say though that ever since Rocco came here she has refused her pellets all together and will only eat his. Hes on an Ekkie soecific pellet. Ever since shes been eating his stuff her feathers have become way more vibrant. I see nothing wrong with zupreem, Rome was almost in complete liver failure and that food help fix her.

I feed Rosie totally organic, it's a fantastic healthy pellet. If you like Harrison's why not just have it shipped to you?

I fed totally organic too for a little while. Then I ran out and it took a couple weeks to get more, and they wouldn't eat it after that! Picky birds.

Actually, I would definitely consider it a true pellet. Although it does contain some sugar, it's way down on the list by the vitamin and mineral supplements, and the nutrtional profile is balanced and guaranteed. That small amount of sugar doesn't bother me particularly. Sugar isn't evil, TOO MUCH sugar is bad.

OTOH, I don't consider TOP (totally organic) a "true" pellet because it does not contain any vitamin or mineral supplementation, and therefore can't deliver a guaranteed nutritional profile. I think it's a good "convenient whole food" and I've used it mixed in with other things in my dry mixes, but it is not a pellet in the sense of a product that has been manufactured to, in essence, deliver the equivalent of a multivitamin and mineral supplement as well as a certain balance of carbohydrate, protien and fat.

You are lucky. I think Harrison's is generally considered the "cadillac" of pellets, but mine have never taken to it.

If you like Harrison's why not just have it shipped to you?

I think they changed their policy and now you have to get it through a vet. Did they back off from that? It was the case about 6 months ago.
