Best way to sanitize a cage?

I just picked up a nice cage off craigslist. the owner is selling it cause his sun conure passed away in Dec. she gave me all the perches and toys that was in the cage also. I am worried if the previous bird had a virus or dieses that got left behind. should I throw away all the old toys and etc.
or is there way to clean them to make sure my new bird will not catch anything left behind. what would the best way to clean the cage?

Thrown way all the toys and perches. You need to scrub the cage with an OXIDIZING CLEANER. If the bottle doesn't say it is an oxidizer, it will not get ride of some of the major avian diseases. I would say to scrub it good with an oxidizing cleaner, using a tooth brush to get the corners and such, rinse it as best you can, and let it sit outside in the weather for a good while. Also, used cages often come with spiders and roaches in the inside of the bars, so be sure to pressure wash and spray those out.

I'd scrub every inch of that cage in bleach/water mix or Virkon-S. I'd throw away every other thing in there, including the dishes if they're crock or plastic. Stainless can be cleaned with the same cleaners, then ran through the super-hot cycle on your dishwasher.

Personally I don't think buying a used cage is worth it. Sure it's an attractive price, but now the worries you have, and I don't blame you. Especially if the last bird in that cage died and it's not confirmed what from. Too many cooties in my opinion, risk of deadly virus and or bringing in a cockroach infestation. Since you already have the cage, just do all the cleaning advised in the previous posts. Lots of extra work... Good luck.
