Cockatoo toys for Cockatoos who don't like toys.

Well, after a month of trying to figure out what toys Nic Nic would actually play with (he completely ignores any chew or shredding toys) the past two days have been ones of discovery for us.

The other night we discovered Nic Nic's obsession with paper. My son drew a picture of a cockatoo and gave it to Nic and I have never seen a bird happier shredding paper. I have a roll of unbleached calculator paper which he has been tormenting for the past few days.

Today, while cleaning his cage, I put a few few locking carabiner on his playpen ladder and he has been opening them all morning.

My question is...any other suggestions for off beat toys which he might like?

He enjoys figuring out "nuts and bolts", carabiners and such.

Look forward to hearing your suggestion.

Thanks....

Re: Cockatoo toys for Cockatoos who don't like toys.

Romeo really likes phone books, I hang them in her cage and she goes to town (someone also suggested to me to use large rolls of plain paper). She also has large plastic nut and bolt pieces (children toys) that she'll take apart and put back together. She also likes to untie knots, so I get cotton rope from the hardware store and tie all kinds of knots in it and she will untie them (sometimes I put nuts inside the knots and she has to untie or chew through the cotton to get to the peanut). Another thing that she likes is destructible foot toys. We usually take little blocks of wood, drill various holes in them and hand them to her and she'll carry them around until their destroyed. One really cute trick that she does, is that we will hang an empty plastic bottle on her play gym, she will take the cap off (unscrew it herself) then take the cap to her water bowl fill the cap with water and hold the cap in her beak, then she'll tilt her head back and drink from the cap. She will do this over and over and over again. Usually when she is done she'll destroy the cap, sometimes she will try to screw it back on the bottle. She didn't start to play with other toys until about week five of having her. Even now she really doesn't destroy them as much yet. I would give Nic Nic time and he should start to play with his other 'bird' toys. I think in discovering the toys that she really likes has encouraged her to play with the more traditional 'bird' toys.
