Cinnamon Conure

My family is thinking of getting a Cinnamon Conure. I have a 14 y/o daughter and a 9 y/o son and a 5 y/o Boston Terrier. I just want to be sure the bird will be ok with a dog and 2 kids. Does anyone know anything about these? We at one time wanted a blue crowned conure but was unable to get one. Now this one has come up for sale and we were thinking about getting him. Any suggestions?

Re: Cinnamon Conure

Well, there is no Cinnamon Conure, so I am assuming you are talking about a Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure. I have a Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure and he is the perfect little bird. Who is going to be responsible for the day to day upkeep?

Re: Cinnamon Conure

My parents got their first bird right before I was born. So I've been with them my whole life. You just have to educate the children on how to approach and handle it. They are probably old enough to do so. Remind them that when the bird first comes home it will be frightened and may not want a lot of attention.

As for the dog, being smaller, hopefully it can't knock the cage over. They may end up getting along great or you may have to keep it in another room when the bird is out. I would introduce them gradually. The bird may be thrilled to watch the dog running around or it may be frightened initially.

Re: Cinnamon Conure

I have two boys; 7 & 4 years old. I also have 5 dogs (2 big, 3 little) & 2 cats. I have my tiel & my ysgcc. I would say it's not as much if the bird can live with your family, as it is if your family is ready to live with a bird. Conures are very social, loving birds. They need lots of attention & an hour minimum out of cage time each day.

Your children will obviously be excited about the new family addition, but need to understand giving a new bird their space is imperative.

You know your children & if they are ready for the patience a new bird requires.

To answer your question simply...a bird is very family oriented. Your children & dog will most likely add to the enjoyment your cinnamon would have in your family. It could take time. I've had my birds for a few months & everyone is still learning & adjusting; humans, furr-babies, & feather-babies.

Good luck with your decision. It's a very exciting one to make!!
