Strange freak out

My nine month old sun conure just did something very strange. I've never seen it before from him. I was just sitting at my desk and letting him play on his play gym, which is on top of his cage, when he made a strange sound and started flapping his wings. He charged forward on top of his cage and, when I came to check on him, was lying on his stomach, wings spread out completely, just staring at me.

I held my finger out to him and said; "Py, step up." and he got right up and stepped into my finger with a happy 'Step up" before giving me a kiss. he's in his cage eating and playing now. He seems fine.

Any idea what this was?

He may have just been playing :p He may have had a lot of energy and needed to have a flip out to expend some of that energy. Young birds will flap for fun a lot :)

Mango does things like that all the time. Hes a red belly, not a conure, but super playful. He also lays on his back and kicks his legs while biting anything in the vicinity, and on occasion he just flaps his wings as hard as he can while screaming.

Did he have any tomato sauce recently?

Just curious...why did you ask about tomato sauce?

When I have spaghetti I have weird dreams. I thought maybe he freaked out due to a weird dream. Beaker did that one time in the middle of the night and flew all around the dark room bumping into stuff... and he had pasta with marinara sauce earlier that day. Coincidence? Maybe but maybe not...

Are you sure its the tomato sauce? I have celiac disease, which is an allergy to wheat and barley gluten. When I eat it, I have all kinds of strange symptoms including nightmares and insomnia. I highly doubt birds suffer from this, but maybe consider documenting your diet and assessing whether you might have an allergy. The best way to tell is a test through your doctor, but this can be very expensive. You can also cut something suspect out of your diet for 6-8 weeks, and then add it back to your diet. Wheat/barley gluten, milk, soy and sesame are the most common ones.

Thanks Megan, I'll see how expensive that allergy test is next time I have a check-up. But in the mean time, I enjoy eating too much to stop certain things for 6-8 weeks just to avoid bad dreams ;)
