Gender Determination

I plan to bring my GCC to the vet next week. When making the appointment I asked to have a gender test and I was asked if I wanted DNA or surgical. They said I would have to leave the bird overnight for the surgical. I opted for the DNA test and said no. Surgery sounds risky to me.

I am curious has anyone had a surgical gender test on their bird?

I feel like a surgical test would be very unnecessarily invasive and stressful on a bird, especially a small one like a gcc. Don't know why anyone would pick that over the DNA test.

At this point the only reason surgical would be better is if you were planning to breed the bird and want to have their reproductive organs examined. However, you can do a DNA test for $20 from home.

I sometimes think about getting the Rickeybird a DNA test Even after 32 years of aggressive/territorial/mating-dance roostering (and no eggs) wouldn't it be a scream if he were a she????
Talk about the Wicked Witch of the west... green, scary and... flighted!
