I just have to share this with everyone because I am so excited about it :)

We are all familiar with the fact that our beloved featherd kids are their own interier decorators. They "decorate" the wall behind their cage with splattered food. I like to call this "bird art".

As wonderful an artist that Stewie is, I HATE scrubbing the wall only to give him a fresh canvas to work with. He eats a lot of soft foods, when it gets stuck to him beak he likes to shake his head and let is splatter.

I took a clear plastic bin, cut a doorway, and set his food dish inside .
He now goes in his little house to eat. When he shakes his head it splatters the inside of the bin instead of my white walls :) It has been a miragle worker for us! Everything is so much easier to clean now.

Can you post pictures of your bin? I'm curious what it looks like, and might make one myself!

Mine go to the food and then go to the highest perch. Then they throw the food. I've seen some plexiglass walls, specifically designed for this purpose, that you can strategically attach to the cage to prevent the food from being thrown through the cage bars. Ahhh, found the link: CAGE SPATTER GUARDS Here's more : http://www.eclectusparrot.com/less.mess.set.html

My naughty little GCC do that too Tracy... I am going to be buying some acrylic sheets and attaching them to the cage :/ They grab food from the bowl and take it and very specifically throw it out of the cage or over the edge of the cage. They also splatter food on the walls. Its going to cost me about $120 to cover the upper rear portions with perspex LOL But I know for a fact they wont stay inside a mess control system, they will grab food and go to an open portion of the cage to chuck it on the floor.

Mango eats most of his meals with us at the kitchen table. He has his own dish and most of the mess falls right back in it. He does shake his head though, and rub his messy face on everything. Luckily its all right at the table though, so its easy to clean. Kind of like eating with a toddler... That said, he takes his pellets up to the top of his cage and does fling them all over the ground, and he shreds his toys and throws them everywhere too. If I give him a new veg he yells at it and throws it off the top of his cage (hes a little dramatic). We do a lot of vacuuming.

I would love to put a hut around Kito's dish, but she just carries food as high as she can, so unfortunately there's no real point in us having one...

I've seen/heard about plexiglass hanging on the cage bars, or placed behind the cage, using a shower curtain behind the cage, plastic runners/office chair mats beneath the cage, a layer of vinyl/linoleum/wood with melamine on it/etc also used beneath the cage. I've also seen a feeding station set up within a fish tank!

Not to mention some of the "no mess" dishes... there's a lot of options and ideas out there!

tlouiselle, glad you were able to find one that works for you! I'd love to figure out a way to make it easier/faster to clean up after my birds but I can never decide for sure on one method!

Here's another help. Nature backgrounds for bird cages It's larger than a poster and it's laminated so it's nice and easy to wipe off. When I first got mine I stuck it on the wall behind Molly's cage and Molly went crazy (the good kind of crazy). She ran toward the back of the cage and started squawking and flapping. It's as if she felt she was back in the rain forest.

Ohhh I love the plexiglass that hangs on the cage! For the most part Strewie shakes his head in his bin...those are perfect to have for when he doesn't though. We are moving and I wanted to keep the freshly painted walls as "fresh" as possible. I was thinking about mounting plexiglass on the walls behind the cage. I like the idea of hanging it on the cage better though!

I will post photos of Stewie's bin...I just have to figure out how to post a photo LOL...

I also line his cage and seed guards with newspaper. I cut and tape the paper to fit the seed guards. The newspaper in his cage gets changed each night. I would rather to that than scrub dried poop off of the bars on the bottom :)
