Hi Guys,
I just brought home my first ekkie Yoshi yesterday. He's about 4 months old and was flown to me yesterday morning and i had him home by around midday. When i first got him into his cage he took some time to explore a bit, then settled down on the highest perch and hasnt left it since. He shuffles about on it and keenly pays attention to anything going on around him, but has made no move in well over 24 hrs to eat or drink anything. is this normal? ive been giving him some space to adjust as being boxed up on a plane seems to have been a bit traumatic and i dont want to rush anything. He also hasnt made a sound apart from one tiny noise yesterday afternoon.
I get he's scared and looks like he'll need a bit of time to come out of his shell and im fine with that, but i'm jsut a little worried that he hasnt touched his food or water in over a day

What was the breeder feeding him??? Have you shown him where his water dish is?? It's not unusual for a new bird not eating for the first few days. If you can have him out with you and put his bowl in front of him and try to hand him some food and see if he would take them that way.

I got my first eckie on Saturday =D Mine is just a baby too and i found he didnt move around much to begin with. I placed him next to the food bowl and left him to it and he eventually hooked into it but he is still a bit slow getting around his cage. I have also found that now he knows me a bit better he will take food from my hand and prefers mushy food that he can easily just swallow. Ask what the breeder has been feeding? I havent seen mine drink but given that his water bowl always ends up a funny color im picking he is (he gets food all over his face!!). What are you feeding him?

Made some progress tonight. Had my parents over for dinner and ive had his cage door open when im around so he can come out if he wants. So in the middle of dinner he launches himself out onto the floor (he came to me clipped), i guess he really wanted to be a part of what was going on. From then he was happy to step up and let me touch him pretty much all over. He had no problem with anyone holding or touching him which is a huge relief as he wouldnt let anyone touch him in his cage.
Breeder was feeding a veg/fruit chop mix with a bit of seed, which is what i also had out but he never touched. i made up a mash of sweet potato and pumpkin with a rice/grain mix mixed in which my dad actually managed to get him to some from his fingers. Still yet to see him drink though, but so happy he's now reasonably comfortable around myself and my family. He's been put to bed now but tomorrow im positive he'll improve his eating, he's a very curious boy.

Its funny how ive been reading up for months and months preparing myself for as much as i can, and even though i knew to expect it would take some time to settle in and that he woudlnt necessarily eat right away, its still so quite worrisome to experience it. But i am so happy he came out and was so calm with us. had an epic snuggle sesh with him on my chest while i ruffed up his neck feathers, he seemed to be enjoying himself. Cant wait to see him get more active over the next few weeks :)

Congratulations on your new baby Yoshi, Tate!!!! It sounds like you've made great progress since your first post. I brought Oliver home last January he was only a few weeks older than your Yoshi. I, like you, read the posts on this forum for months while waiting to bring my little guy home. And though I learned tons, the real deal was a huge surprise. I thought it would be a horrible adjustment based on everything I'd read (books too!) but he did quite well, but unlike your little guy he knew me from regular visitations and he didn't take a long scary plane ride. I think based on what Yoshi went through he sounds like he's on par. In the beginning, I gave Oliver tons of adjustment time. I have his cage next to my desk so he was quite close. I left his door open and intermittently fed him warm mushy oatmeal with mashed banana with a long tea spoon and that did it...he loved the food and warmed up to his environment quite nicely.

I look forward to hearing more about your new baby!

Lisa
