Electus vs Green Cheek Conure

My better half wants a bird. she fell in love with the green cheek conure. I went out to check out the birds and came accross the electus. Both are gorgeous birds but the electus seems like it might offer a bit more in terms of interaction and just a less delicate size as we will be starting a family in a year or so. What recommendations or info can you all offer me on this topic.

I've been told that Electus (or Electi?) are relatively quite birds. Conures, on the other hand, have a reputation of being loud birds. Sterotypes aside, I picked up a Sun Concure two weeks ago and he's been very, very quiet and well mannered.

I think either one could be good. But GCC's are great family birds and HIGHLY 'interactive'.

Being owned by a GCC I can speak from experience that GCC are HIGHLY interactive members of the family. I know people who have Eekies and they are quieter low-strung birds for the most part.

A GCC is a great addition to the family and will keep you on your toes! BIG BIRDIE ATTITUDE in a small compact size ... would someone please tell my Maki that she's NOT a Macaw ...

I too considered both a conure or an eckie when wanted a bird last year. I put in a lot of research as I wanted a bird that I could take to work with me a few days a week and was very family interactive and good with my employees too. I spoke to my cousin who is a vet and always had a passion for our feathered friends and he suggested a conure would be a good bird to start with but when I went to the breeder I realised the noise would be a huge problem at work so we opted for an eckie instead.

We had a few noisy months with Puffin as he was only just weaned when we bought him and he screeched a lot in the first two months but as soon as he learnt his first word the screeches stopped and the "hello's" started!

Puffin will happily go to any family member however I am his person and if I am in the room it is me he wants to be with. I am not sure how the conures are with picking a person but I know Puffin is a treasured member of our family.

I have a male eclectus jack, he is now 8 months old and had him since 14 weeks. I have to agree with Caliopi above. In the first 2 months or so , he was screeching a little and was still being weaned at the time. But as soon as he started to learn to speak the screeching and squawks all stopped. Now I have this gorgeous little green thing that says " hello, how are ya ? " every 5 minutes and on a good day if he is in a good mood - if you say the same thing back to him his reply will be " Im alright ? ". Gee Im still trying to get over his replies hahahahahah I cant believe the words he is picking up. He tells the dogs to "get out" as we dont allow them in the house and if he catches them inside he yells "get out " , he calls to our cat bella and likes to chase her. But the squawks and screeching has now stopped and been replaced with a little squeaky girly voice. Just sooooooo Gorgeous !

I've read that Eclectus can certainly squawk a lot at the younger ages, like what everyone else says. But if you raise them from a chick, they grow up and eventually replace screeching with talking. Providing a nice variety of toys and words/phrases to learn can actually create a dream bird.

From what I can tell, Conures seem to be the bad boys of the parrot world. Although those eyes look so innocent, they somehow cram all the attitude of a teenager into a body that's no bigger than a dove. Despite this, they're quite a joy to have around. They are extremely active birds that will keep you busy. These playful birds also require a fair amount of daily exercise.

I can't even begin to explain how good it feels when you wake up in the morning and go to make a cuppa and be greeted with " Hello mum what are you doing? I love you mum, I love you, I love you, I love you" and this little green head pokes his cage cover out of the way so he can see you and you would swear he is smiling as he spots you and you get another "Hello!"

Sure my cats all run to greet me too but that's more for them wanting their food than me and as much as I love them, when a pet actually talks to you it brings it to a whole new level

I would have totally agree with caliopi, it is soooooooo different when you have your pet talking back to you and you can just tell how excited they are to see you. I have a cat and 2 dogs , I love them all , but there is something just very special about owning my little green boy, and in their own little way they can make you feel special too.

I saved a Conure the owner was in a car wreck i was an emt and had my other half come pick it up from shelter .
after 3 weeks i was begging the doc to let her out of the hospital.

On the other hand i was told they can be taught to behave them selfs.
and not screech.

My green cheek isn't too loud at all, altho she does call when I leave the room. Her call isn't very loud, though, so it really isn't too bothersome. She has an AMAZING personality. She is so funny and loveable. She loves to be scratched and petted!

Wow , Mark said the one i saved was a Sun .
yellow with lots of colors .
the bird was heavily infested with mites .
Vet was good about yelling at me for risks but my home is 4 bedrooms and i have the door stoppers that literally block the whole under ninth and use one of the rooms as a quarantine room at that time.

The Eclectus was actually one of the first parrots I fell in love with before I decided to get 'tiels. I would certainly recommend this bird to you. If you watch "Riley" the eclectus parrot on youtube, you'll fall in love as well.

It never ceases to amaze me how smart these birds are.Puffin has this new habit of trying to get his food bowl out of it's holder and then throwing the contents all over the place. Naturally when we see him doing it we try and stop him by calling his name in a cross voice. Just now he went to the bowl and grabbed it in his beak, looked at me and said " PUFFIN, naughty boy, leave it alone"! Followed by a quick pitch of the bowl and a " I love you!"
