I have a two year old Male peach face lovebird named Walle, he is an awesome bird! Last year around this time he got an ear infection in his left year, brought him to an avian vet, he got ear drop antibiotics, cleared up and had no problems until this morning, I noticed some discharge this time in his right ear, why is this happening? Its almost to the date a year later. I hear ear infections in birds are pretty rare, is he just susceptible to ear infections (like a kid) I will be taking him to the vet this evening after work, but wondering if there are any preventative measures I can take.

Thanks you

Update, Walle is now on antibiotics, poor little guy (liquid drops for his ear) 1 drop 3 x a day for 14 days. He is such a good bird, I don't have a problem administering the drops, he does get a bit nervous and kind of sits and hides on my shoulder/back of the neck for a few minutes afterwards, then he's back to his loving self, giving kisses and wanting attention.

Could be he is just going to have this issue come up, couldn't really get a solid answer as to why he gets them, he is just susceptible to them. He has a good diet, eats fruits and veggies, pellets, millet, seeds and his reward treat is sunflower seeds, which he loves, he was blood tested last year for diseases and DNA test, everything was normal and 100% male, which I knew anyway by his behavior and personality. He has a good consistent schedule. Gets out everyday and has total free flight, I don't trim his wings. I change his bed every two days and clean his cage once a week, wash bowls everyday. The vet went through everything with me. Would love to hear comments from anyone having experienced this ear infection thing.

Thanks

I'm sorry about poor Walle's ear infection. He sounds like such a lovable little fellow. It sounds like you covered all the bases with Walle's Av Vet, and it also sounds like Walle has an adoring Mom and a fantastic home. I wish I had an answer for you. I've never heard of a parrot with an ear infection. He must be a very well behaved Lovebird, I'm afraid if I tried putting drops in any of my parrots ears I'd pay dearly and I can't imagine where the drops would wind up. I hope some of our members with Lovebird experience will be able to help. I hope Walle feels much better now that he has antibiotics.

I've honestly never heard much about ear infection in parrots but I think you may be right with the idea of him just being incredibly prone to them. I know that my father was incredibly susceptible to ear infections, no matter what he did, so it wouldn't surprise me if something could also happen to birds, too.

I hope it clears up and it stays away, though! It's great that he's so easy to manage with administering his treatment, he definitely sounds like a sweet heart like Allee said :)
