So over the last week i have noticed that macaws have a certain smell. For me it is like cocaine. Just wondering if this smell applies to all macaws and if everyone smells the same thing.
Thanks for any replies.

All macaws except Hyacinth have a preen gland located on the topside center of their back. This gland submits an oil that the bird uses to waterproof and preen their feathers. To me, my boy Doogie smells like hot buttered popcorn!

Well erm, ehem...clear throat. /silence.

Yeah interesting. I wouldn't know that smell. Now I'm curious LOL

Of course you just meant it as it is an ADDICTIVE smell! I like my Pionus smell and you will usually find my nose on her !!LOL. She actually tends to gently squeeze my nose with her beak. Thought it was affectionate, now I realize she's trying to tell me to quit sniffing her AHAH. I don't even realize I'm doing it half the time!! Hehe

I can sometimes smell the zons when you enter the room. It's addictive. Of course my YNA girl "jake" lets me "huff" her anytime.

Hhahaha, tbh no i dont know what cocain smells like, i only know what it looks like from movies. However in regard to the addictiveness yes you are all right.

I find even in the mornings i walk into the lounge and it just smells of her, its total necter.

And yes i am constantly sniffing her head/neck/under neck/under wing pretty much every where decent, she even lifts her wing now to let me, i do it that much.

I repay her by letting her play with my ear. She loves to put my lobe in the back of her beak and almost baby suckle. Weird i know but she likes it and it gives me goosebumps. She preens me i preen her, works well.

As much as I love the smell of my Big Macs, I could literally bury my nose into my Amazons all day long. I've said it once, but I'll say it again. They should market an Amazon scent. I'd be wearing it all over. :D

And I never knew you "smelled" cocaine.

someday very soon a hyacinth! :)
I have some feathers from my mom's b&g, and they STILL smell delicious...kind of fruity and tropical. I would definitely wear that as a perfume!

I don't detect a smell from Hahnzel, but my wife does. She also commented last night how she is less sensitive to his dander than she was to our conures.

Valentino smells like peppers. Hot peppers like jalapenos and the like. He also has the softest feathers I have ever felt on a parrot. They are even softer than a cockatoo. I think this is because of where they come from high up in cliffs in a dry desert region.

I think he smells like peppers because I feed him lots of different peppers mixed in his fresh mix/salad. He likes to suck on and eat the meat of the peppers leaving the skins. Sometimes when perched on my hand it will burn. Once he licked the edge of my eye and it burned for over an hour. LOL. Valentino is my pepper parrot.

I was told it was their lack of saliva that makes it possible for them to eat hot foods like that.
