Skittles

I'm so excited!

I posted last week that I was going to have a sleepover with Skittles. I picked her up on Wednesday and had to return her on Saturday. We had a great time, but by Friday, I was getting sad knowing that the next day she would be gone. I wasn't even sure what the next step was. I was pretty sure that if all went well, I would be able to try a longer sleepover next time.

Well I got to the shelter and Jody, the owner of the shelter was there. I kidded with her that I was thinking of kidnapping Skittles and running to Mexico. She asked how everything went, watched me take her out of the travel crate and said "Skittles looks great, she is yours!"

Volunteering at the shelter since January really help me form a bond with her. But all the tips and great advice I have read on this forum really gave me the knowledge and confidence to be able to adapt a bird that needed a good home. Thank you!

So please welcome Skittles to the forum!

Wow, thanks for all the comments. Yes Skittles was rescued from a hoarder and was in really bad shape. Out of the five macaws that were rescued, only three of them survived.

The only problem that I have is that Skittles is great with me, but is happy to bite anyone else. I have a son and daughter that want to be friends with Skittles. Any tips on socializing a bird is greatly appreciated.

Just have them give her lots of treats. Spend time near the cage talking. Have the whole "flock" spend time together. (We do movie time with the parrots on stands and every one shares there popcorn , unsalted popped in coconut oil.)
It will take time but it will happen.

A big congrats to you Chesphoto & Skittles!!! She is a gorgeous girl!! And she is super lucky to have lived over the neglect her other flock members sadly did not. I love how she looks so excited with her new found home & friend.

Getting a parrot to accept other members of the non feathered kind can be tricky. Some parrots of any species just never allow anyone but their bonded favorite human to hold or interact with them. While others will learn to accept the rest of the humans in their lives to a certain extent. Then some are super fine with all members of the human flock. You never know how a new parrot will decide to fit into the family. My Catalina Roscoe tolerates my hubby, but won't allow him to hold or touch him. He will take treats from him all day long tho. My new GW girl, Ruby Jewel allows both of us to hold her, but she has only been home for 3 weeks now. That may change as she becomes secure in her surroundings.

Skittles needs time to adjust to all the changes & she just may decide on her own to welcome your children into her flock as well. As ShellyBorg mentioned, have the rest of the family spend quality time with Skittles & giving her treats so she knows they are part of her new found home.
