I worked a job tonight for a pet rescue fundraiser - there was a couple there with their birds. So I spent four hours with these lovelies.

Sweet, and funny!
Once, while hanging with the wife's Bongo, he decided to nail me! Well, when I came home, JoJo immediately recognized what the mark was from! None too happy!!

Looks fun! What kind of macaw is that who's about the same size as the amazon? I know theres quite a few mini Macs, you just don't hear much about them.

Top left is a Military Macaw, top right is an Eclectus, bottom left is a Senegal, bottom right, on top, is a Blue fronted Amazon, and below him, in the same picture, is a Severe Macaw

Thanks. The severe macaw is very pretty and a nice size. I didn't realize they were that close in size to a bigger amazon. For some reason I thought they were a lot smaller (?). If I ever got another bird, I'd only consider in a similar size range to Kiwi (not that I'm looking to get any further birds in the foreseeable future!).

Military macaws (strictly looks wise) are my favorite macaws. Guess I'm partial to green birds:p They are really beautiful but also really big!

He was the first Military I've ever been around that was "loveable" .. The Amazon kept singing How Much is That Doggy in the Window. It was too cute. I'm partial to the male Eclectus

I've heard the MM's can be nippy along with most of the mini-macs. Everyone loves amazons when they're in a good mood:p Male ekkies are supposedly real sweethearts. We came very close to putting a deposit on a baby male ekkie from a breeder before deciding to adopt a bird instead.

Were these birds someones pets or were they all up for adoption?

I've not been around any adult severe macaws (and have heard HORRIBLE things about them as adults) but they were one of my favorites when working with them as handfed babies... almost every one was extremely snuggly and without exception they all began talking by the time they were weaned.
I wish they could be a "family bird" and not known for their bonding to one person though.

This one was a rescue .. He was cage aggressive and not able to be held when they got him .. The owner said it took him nearly a year and last night he let many people hold him

I wonder how much of that stems from old school misconceptions/misunderstandings about raising parrots and owners being unprepared for puberty/hormonal behavior? I have heard the mini Macs do tend to be nippy, but I've also heard male hot 3 amazons can't even be kept as pets after puberty because they become too aggressive. Kiwi was aggressive when we got him, but he's a good boy now and it's just a matter of training, socializing, reading his body language during the breeding season and having him stick trained for those times he's too hormonal to handle. I'm betting it's very similar with some of the notoriously nippier macaw species- training, socialization and understanding the birds body language. They just don't seem popular enough in the pet trade for there to be enough owners to come out to dispel the rumors/offer advice on how to raise them successfully into adulthood as other species with bad reputations have had done.
