YNA or Noble Macaw

What is everyoneís experience with Yellow Naped Amazons and Noble Macaws? I have done my research but also looking for real life experiences that people have had with the different bird species. A rescue near me has a Noble Macaw that has been a plucker for a while and itís available for adoption and then someone is rehoming a YNA near me.

The amazon will be a bit more difficult to care for, behavior wise.

The macaw will be a bit more nippy and vocal.

Size differences too. The amazon needs a bigger cage. Do you want a medium parrot or small parrot?

I have an IRN right now so looking to get a bigger bird. This would be my first macaw or amazon.

If you haven’t seen the noble macaw in person, they are small. Not far off from your IRN’s body size, but stockier and not so long of a tail. Definitely NOT a bigger bird.

The size isn’t really a big factor in determining what step I take next. Just trying to see what people’s experiences have been between the two species. I would like on that is hand tame and will interact with me but also be friendly to my spouse as well.

I have zero macaw experience, large or small, but I do have the sweetest YNA on the planet- for me, and a select few. She would eat the liver of most other people. That being said, it is entirely a matter of the bird's preference. The only way to know is to meet them and spend time with them. Both of you. In my experience, birds are much better at choosing us than we are at choosing them. You'll know. This doesn't mean you can't develop a bond, but it's much easier when they choose you.

My apologies, but Iím a bit confused by your contradictory posts about size. If itís a factor, go with the YNA. If itís not, then I recommend meeting both and seeing which one chooses you, rather than you choose the bird.

The bond is always better when the bird chooses the human - youíve seen Harry Potter, I assume? The wand chooses the wizard Harry. Go the other way and it doesnít always work out well.

What I was meaning by that is that between the IRN and the two species list, they are going to be bigger then my IRN. I was meaning that between the YNA and the Noble Macaw, the size difference wasn’t a very big factor between picking one over the other. Looking for a bigger bird then my IRN.

Ok, that’s a bit clearer, thank you. As I noted previously, noble macaws aren’t bigger. They’re going to be about the same size as your IRN, They are just a little stockier.

I’m with chris and saxguy, MUCH better to meet both birds if possible and let the bird do the choosing. Of course there’s always the chance both may choose you, or neither.

Sorry I guess I’m really not being much help am I??!

(PS saxguy, jeez I sure am glad I don’t have any liver eaters in my house \o/ !!)
