Neglected, very pitiful parrots next door

I don't know what to do or if I can do anything. These two birds are so sad looking. I peeked my head through the neighbors door the other day in order to see them after noticing them through a window. Ohmygosh. I was so sad. The Grey is in a cage with one wobbly perch! And the Quaker wasn't any better. I just cannot stop thinking of these birds. I've thought of telling her she should sell them. These people are the type that would maybe prefer money. Very poor people. And they keep a very UN clean and trashed house. And I can't imagine that these birds get interaction and the cages were so tiny with no toys. They have way too many animals and people living in this one home and there's no telling how they got these birds. There has to be a way to rescue them but I don't have the money to offer enough I don't think.

I agree with Grey. AND, if possible, take some photos, too (as proof), as the ASPCA can't just enter their house if the home owners don't allow it.

I would have to agree with Grey and Wendy. First thing I would do is to take pictures of both the trashed house / property and the birds. This is to document the living conditions of both the residents and their pets. Calling the SPCA / Humane Society, any animal rights groups in your area, a local bird club with contacts, or to go even further just to draw attention to what is happening... Call the city and report code violations giving them your neighbors address. Just tell the city you feel because of how "trashed" the home is you feel it is unsafe / fire hazard / unsanitary and you also feel it reflects bad on your neighborhood. Although they city might not do anything, it will at least have more eyes on the issue at hand when they come to inspect. I have done all of the above with varied results, I guess how much this issue means to you is what is going to make the difference. GL and keep us posted!

In my area, the big animal rescues like SPCA and Humane Society don't really know how to deal with birds, and there isn't really any legal way to get birds out of a home that is meeting the bare minimum (food and water)... but maybe they are better in your own! Perhaps you could ransom the birds? Offer some quick cash to get them out of that bad home...

I considered the quick cash. Was going to try start low and see what they take. If they won't budge then I will see what else can be done. Then at that point it may be obvious who's to blame on tattle telling but I don't care. These birds need rescuing soon.

It is painful to give money to people who neglect pets because it enables them, but the most important thing is getting the birds out and into a safe, loving home.

It is. I'll recover the money but you're right, I don't like the thought of giving them money, but maybe they'll use it to buy the children some shoes. Hmmm, maybe a trade instead!

A trade might be better because you'd be giving the family something they need. The kids really don't have shoes? Then caring for parrots is probably a really low priority.

Whatever happened to the notion Love Thy Neighbor? Yes I agree if the animals are being abused then by all means you should save them. I would also recommend that you should love your neighbor and be conscious of what they might be going through, peace.

I agree with everyone's comments however if she purchases the birds, those uneducated owners will just do it to future animals they own. They won't really learn. Unless she tells them why she is buying the poor birds from them.

Well, all in all education can only happen to those willing to listen. Maybe initially you can offer some better quality food and perches. If they are open to that and see that you are trying to help, them may be willing to have you take over the birds. Sometimes people don't know how to improve things. If they take offence back off, and then maybe offer a little money to get them interested, while pointing out that with so much on their plate, it will be easier if the birds weren't there. Good luck, I know its hard to see others not giving the care your own animals are used to.

Information is key as well as communication in solving any situation. Start a conversation with these people, say you've noticed the birds and inquire about them. with the info you gain it will be easier to plan a course of action.

I agree with RescueMe and Sandy. As long as u feel safe, perhaps u could approach them to make conversation and say something like... I heard your birds, and I have birds too. Just wondering what kind you have? You could offer some stuff, like saying you have some extra bird toys and a couple of perches or dishes or food that you can't use up fast enough. Try to get more info -- i.e. they may be taking care of them for someone who handed them over just as you see them. You could say you know a lot about birds and love them and would love to see their birds. If you get in, you could make suggestions, like Wow, these types of birds love toys and to climb from perch to perch.

Or, you could be straight forward and let them know you saw the birds, and that you have birds, and felt concerned because these types of birds need multiple perches and things to play with along with a special diet. And tell them you would like to help set up their cages with some extra stuff that you have in your house. Maybe you'll find out they would love for someone to take them. You can even offer to have them stay at your house for a while so you can try t teach them some things and they'll have fun.

Last but not least, u can contact a local parrot rescue and ask for advise. Surely they have had concerns brought to them like this one. Please do keep up posted by updating this link if you are able to get anywhere with them.

Thank you all again. I've suggested to one of the children I was interested in the birds. He says they belong to an aunt. I'm definitely going to go the route of offering perches and toys now since they aren't interested in selling. I'll also ask to play with them.

Fine feathered friends, I'm not sure at what point you believe me to be negative towards the neighbors. There's a lot going on that I didn't mention that would horrify a lot of people. Yet I made no ugly remarks, just stated what I had seen. Love thy neighbor is a broad statement. Unless someone is 100% without fault they shouldn't assume and preach where not warranted. Peace.

Be careful it doesn't back fire on you and it ends up causing lots of trouble or hard feelings for you and your neighbor. They may stay there for a long time and the bad feelings can go on and on. But I agree the birds need to be saved and rescued. Can you do it without letting them know that you did it? But if all else fails then do what you have to do to save the birds and other animals if they have them. Good luck!

Okay everyone, it looks like she may be interested in selling the African grey. I'm not sure of specifics but ilk get to ask her tomorrow I believe. Im trying to decide how much would be too much to give and be able to recoup.

My daughter would say you have a feathered heart. We saw a very sad neglected African grey at a roadside fruitstand while vacationing in Southern California last month. I was so excited to stop and buy local strawberries and avocadoes but all I remember now is that poor sad birdie in its dirty little cage.

Okay, It's official. Im adopting the Grey. IM SO NERVOUS!!!
