Taking naps near your bird

I'm just curious what your experiences are. I nap on the couch while he's in the cage a couple of feet from me. The other day I could see him gently sneaking around to avoid making noise.

And he's quiet the moment I lay down. Very considerate guy he is.

But what really impresses me is his alertness and eye sight. If all I do is slowly open my eyes he spots it right away and gives a vocal response. He must be staring at me the entire time I'm asleep.

I rarely take a nap but always sleep at night with a bird in small uncovered cage a few feet from bed. They are almost always quiet and seemingly "respectful" of my rest. As a light sleeper most any move will wake me, such as the morning crunch of pellets or even the "splat" signalling the end of digestion! All are Goffins and never have "night frights" or disturbances. Once in a very long while one will scream during the wee hours but all is well. Perhaps birdie equivalent of a nightmare?

That's cute that he was trying to be quiet (flock animals lol-- can you imagine a flock being like, HEY YOU-- YOU WOKE US ALL UP!! BAHHH!" HAHA

If he's in the cage- that's fine, but if not, there have been more than a few tragic posts within the past year or two alone about people falling asleep and accidentally rolling over on their birds. That is no lie- I remember the posts because they were so traumatizing.

when I worked nights my birds never made a peep. Now I work days, and clark knows when I wake up so literally about the time my alarm is about to go off she starts with a low, come on come on. Birds seemingly are ok with us sleeping so long as they can see us. Its when we leave they start the contact calls.

If I fall asleep on the couch deliberately or accidentally my birds are usually quite.

Alex doesn't care LOL He just thinks if he is up I should be up. Here is a photo from a couple years ago when I covered him but not enough.... he found the gap and was down there whistling at me like, "ha ha you tried to put me to bed but it ain't happenin', Ma!" The instant the photo was taken you can tell he was mid beack click heart wings. <3

The only bird currently in our bedroom is the Pigeon, and he tends to stay quiet in the morning even if we are awake. As long as we talk quietly, he uses his "smallbird" voice. At night when we cover him is another matter entirely. He contact calls for quite a long time before settling down to go to sleep. But he is still very new in our home. Today is 2 weeks he has been with us.

Julio tends to take on the roll of house protector at night. Tends to nap a bit more during the day than our other Amazons had. Clear Contact Calls if anything is not to his liking.

My Sunny does this in the morning. I often get up quite early & then go back to sleep in the living room with the birds. At that point I will partially- or entirely-uncover her. Cage still securely latched, I go back to sleep in front of her. And, she will not make a peep until she sees me twitching my legs. (OR until my alarm rings! THEN she assumes SHE needs to let me know that it has rung, and DOES SO!!)

But until then, she is silent. I can hear toys rustle as she sneaks around, or crunching of food. I have even opened my eyes and watched her holding her Ring-A-Bell so she can play with it silently!

My YNA lets me sleep whenever I want, and I take crazy scheduled “naps” of 3 hours here, three hours there...I don’t do an 8-hour overnight sleep:

I’m retired, COVID has turned the world upside down, and I’m obviously mentally disturbed. But as mentioned above, I’m always on the coach, just a few feet away from him.

I laugh when people say 10 to 12 hours of undisturbed sleep for a bird.

In what household, in what universe!?
