Cockatoo

Hello everyone,, I have just adopted a goffin cockatoo that has some issues..lol.. the pet store owner couldnt tell me much except that she was abandoned and believes she was used for breeding only. I am a sucker for saving animals!! I have 3 other birds as well. So she is a goffin cockatoo and does not trust ppl at all!!!!.. When I am able to get her out of the cage and go into a small room with me she will step up and kind of let me pet her head..but you can tell she is petrified.. I have been sitting next ot her cage and talking calmly to her.. putting my hand on the cage and just letting her get used to her surroundings.. she has pulled out most of her feathers,, took her to the vet to check for mites, lice etc.. was negative.. she was like that when I got her.. Anyways my question is does anyone have any insight on taming a female goffin cockatoo (approx. 2 years old) that was mistreated and used for breeding only?

Re: Cockatoo

Lots of time, patience, and love. Also find out what her favorite food is....just like a man the fastest way to the heart is through the stomach.

Even a very tame bird will take a lot of time possibly years to get comfortable and trusting in a new environment.

I wish you the best and thank you for taking on this creature in need.

Re: Cockatoo

Thanks for the rescue!!! And thanks in advance for your patience, kindness, and commitment to a mistreated soul. I hope you will share the joy of all the little moments of progress you will see, so we can share the joy. Everybody above have you great advice and links. You can also read the blue sticky thread at the top of Amazon forum, I love Amazon's the ongoing journey. Yes it maybe about Amazon but Sailboat covers rescue and shut down birds, I found it full of good advice.

Re: Cockatoo

Welcome to you and your Goffins! They are magnificent parrots and by far my favorite. So much so I have a formerly bonded breeding pair and their three hand-fed offspring. Life with a family of 5 Goffins is sublime!

Superb advice above!! I can assure you she is keenly observing and processing her new environment. While her baseline may be wild, it is possible to alter behavior. The gateway for taming mine was sudden male aggression following 23 years in my home. She was permanently separated and lived solitary for about 6 months. I began to handle her and was never bitten. A few months later she was placed in a protected bird-room with two of her offspring, a TAG, M2, and Citron. All six acclimated and after a short time she was allowed to roam free and never caged.

She always had a sweet and mellow personality, thus a great candidate for taming. Hard to know the parallels with your Goffin, but my belief is they are highly intelligent and quite suitable for bonding. Proceed slowly, no faster than apparent progress. The two bond-forming links kindly posted by Ellie777Australia form an excellent basis. They are food motivated, so make bowls of treats/veggies/fruits; one for each of you. Begin eating from yours, bobbing your head and aurally expressing joy. They really are flock eaters, an excellent adjunct to earning trust.

Good luck, please keep us advised, share the successes!!

Welcome and be welcomed.

You are getting really good advice here. The "I love Amazon" stickir, has so much great info that is applicable to all parrots. Good luck and let know how you are progressing. This is a great forum, with a lot of really nice people whose main interest is PARROTS.
