There seems to have been a few birds that died suddenly. recently and if got me to thinking after all the news lately about west nile virus cases in people. I think I remember when they first started seeing it in this country it started kiliing some blue jays and various blackbirds. Since it is transmitted as far as I know by mosquitos I was just wondering if anybody has any information?

It depleted the local crow population the last time it came around. It was especially apparent at Whittier Narrows, where hundreds of crows sleep. It's kinda' swampy there, so mosquito territory.

We used to live in Mass Near RI. when it first showed up there and I remember them asking for reports of any dead birds and they would collect them for testing

a lot of parrots that have it don't show any signs at all until it is much too late, including drowsiness and being generally off-balance / trouble perching... :(

It effects parrots similar to peoples, some people /birds have no symptoms or mild symptoms, to others it is fatal. Not every one who contracts WNV will die, same is true for birds, although i think it does have a tendency to effect birds more than peoples.

I believe that transmission of WNV from bird to bird is via insect (mosquito) so I'd think mostly aviary parrots would be at risk.
