You said that she used to pluck? Plucking cause damage to the follicles and it can be so bad that they do not even get new feathers. I think her funny looking feathers are due to this.
Here is a website with two photos of macaws, you can see how their feathers look.
awww they also look like some of nuts chewed feathers, when coco molts and re grows new feathers then you'll know for sure, if they are growning out a funny shape
but for now if coco's had all clear from the vet, she's doing well as she's settling in etc
Your bird is is barbering his feathers. Try aloe/water mist baths dailey. Offer some chamomile tea to help calm him. Provide lots of chewing and foraging opportunities in his cage.
My friend's Grey looks like that too. She chewed her feathers after my friend left her with his brother when he went for vacation. She continued chewing even after she was brought home.
Yes. You purchase aloe vera liquid from the drug or health store. It come in a gallon jug, I believe. Mix 50/50 to water. Use warm water. Mist the bird all over, feet too. It is very soothing, stops itch and dryness.
ok - thanks I'll try it. Bela had been barbering his feathers slightly when I got him - but he had been through a very stressful 2 weeks. He had a full physical with my vet, and she said he looked fine (other than the barbering). I've noticed him scratching at his neck quite frequently lately - I mean not constant but a decent amount - so I thought I'd see what I could try!
Thanks
