Hi friends, I'm a new Quaker mom. We're fostering one, and she preens for ages - today more than an hour in one stretch. At the end my husband's shoulder looked like it was covered in dandruff. I don't know if it's bits of feather sheaths or dry skin - is there a way to tell? She is a terrible eater, only really likes seeds and is uninterested in the taste of most fruits and veggies. I don't know if she may be malnourished and therefore has dry skin? I'm wondering if I should just take her to the vet.

During the winter, using heaters can give them dry skin. Also, you should scratch your Quaker's head every day to get dandruff out, as they can't really preen their heads themselves. Quaker parrots get alot of it.

Mine preens a lot too.. pretty much any time he's on my shoulder he starts preening either himself or me.

Good luck

Does yours ever bathe? My conure does it every other day but the Quaker shows no sign.
