Hello!
I'm Dani, and I live in Anchorage, Alaska with two sweet little parakeets named Lemon and Olaf. I also have three horses and two dogs.
I've owned them for only a couple of months, and they are quickly becoming my new best friends. Before these sweet little things came into my life I owned a little blue parakeet for 10 years. I was 13 at the time and am from a family that never really enjoyed birds. Well, the story of Destin (short for Destiny) entering my life makes me laugh everytime, so I'll tell it for you all!
It was late one afternoon when my parents were out gardening and my dad was trimming hedges. As he was doing so a little blue bird caught his eye. The little guy was high in the tree and obviously huddled and trying to hide from the array of wild birds we have here (ravens, eagles, various other BOP). Well my dad decided to ignore him (assuming he would be a snack) and out of nowhere this little parakeet flew down and landed on his head! He carefully picked the little guy up and put him on a branch, apparently thinking his daughter did NOT need a bird because he knew I would fall for the little guy. But a minute later this little parakeet flew right back onto his shoulder. Every time he would get the little guy off of him, this brave little bird would fly right back. Finally, getting frustrated that this little bird would not leave him alone he asked every single passerby on a trail we live next to if they wanted a parakeet. Everyone refused. So after hours of this my dad gave in and showed up with a happy little parakeet sitting on his head. My mom told him the bird had obviously picked our family so the least we could do was keep him safe while we tried to find his owners. I immediately fell in love and after spending weeks trying to find his owners we chose to keep him. Destin was so loved, and he loved our family. I've never been around a parakeet so full of life and so sweet towards people. He was my little buddy for 10 years till he passed away a couple of months ago. It completely broke my heart. He was an adult when we first had him so I'm not sure how old he actually was. It still makes me tear up just thinking about it.
Anyways! Shortly after his passing, my friend offered me her two parakeets for free since she didn't spend anytime with the little guys. I couldn't say no. They are still a little nervous and converting them to pellets has been quite interesting, but overall it's so nice to hear their little sounds through the house again.
I can't wait to be a part of this community! I am so tempted to add to my little flock so have been doing lots of research on the different types of parrots etc. and this forum is perfect for that! Nothing like actual owners to be able to give me a unique viewpoint on their birds.
Oh, and my father never regrets having that little bird find HIM. They are now huge bird lovers after seeing how intelligent and sweet these birds can be. <3 My dad and that little bird had such a cute bond, if he saw my dad anywhere he would fly to be on his shoulder. Just seeing them together always made me laugh, a very odd duo for sure! Though the first few years my dad would say he only liked HIS bird.
