Percy moved into his new cage on Sunday afternoon and whilst a little timid at first, started exploring and trying out everything soon enough. He's already decided that the guava perch is his favourite (even though the comfy perc is higer in the cage) and sleeps on this one.
He's also seems comfortable with me adding extra things or moving things around when I notice they're in his way or not working for him. This is nice but he was very cage possessive in his old cage. I could not work in or on his old cage except to feed him without him lunging at me. In the new cage he sits quietly and waits for my back to be turned so that he can quickly scurry out.
While he will go into the cage when coaxed, he does his best to stay out of it, begging any and all who walk by to open the door after which he will clamber out and hotfoot it over to his playgym, where he will stay as long as he's allowed. Also, when he's in the cage, it is like he takes forever to settle down and eat or just chill. He climbs up the one side and hangs from the domed roof while making his way to the other side and then does the whole trip over again.
Lastly, while he protested being closed for bed time in his old cage, he very quickly settled down and went to sleep. Not so with the new cage. He clambers about, moaning and complaining, pulling at the cover (same one I used on the old cage) until I come open it a bit. I've taken to not covering him completely and he seems much better with this arrangement.
The new cage is about 60% larger than his old one and there are several new toys in it, along with some older ones that I know he likes (especially his 'hidey toy' that he hides behind). He has inspected and played a little with all the toys.
Is all of this just because he's still feeling new and unsure in the new cage? I would hate for him to be unhappy in it Will it blow over eventually? Is there anything I can do to make the change easier on him? Whilst the new cage is nicer and bigger, the main reason I moved him was because the old cage was ancient, rusted and in awful shape - he can't go back to it.
