As much as I want to beg you to taker her...if you give the store the outrageous price they're asking, doesn't that mean they'll just go out and replace her with a baby and do the exact same thing to that bird? :(

Humans make me sick sometimes.

thanks so much for all of your feedback and advice!

i've thought it through and decided that i will go and get her:) just cleared out some space for her at the back away from the other fids! it won't be a huge bird room like some people have but rather a bird corridor for her lol :p hopefully it'll be good enough!

i will call the shop owner some time this week to make an offer. fingers crossed that he agrees to sell her!!~

ohh yeah @empath: i really wish there were parrot rescues here but sadly there's none:(

and i would also hope that experienced 'too owners can advice on how to teach them to self-entertain…thanks!!

@aether-drifter: sorry!forgot to reply ya in da previous post! umm i would hope that they don't do that. i don't think this shop would spend the money to buy another baby coz honestly most people here trade in their parrots with shops, for an 'upgrade' or when some problems arise. that's how a lot of parrots in sad conditions come to stay in shops and i THINK that its the case for the poor fella here.

also another question….cages here are very costly and i was thinking of having her cage-less instead. buying a cage big enough for a 'too would probably set me back another 1000:(

would it be okay if i set-up play gyms in her 'corridor' and have her in a sleep cage at night?

I hope you're right! I am glad for the bird that you decided to help her. I just really hope they don't go out and do it all over again. :(

Cockatoos can be extremely destructive, so I would definitely think long and hard before you decide to have her roaming free when you're not there to watch. Never underestimate their ability to get into trouble!

If you can cockatoo-proof a room (not exactly an easy undertaking, but can be done), then that would be your best best for having her cage-free. Still, she might feel very isolated in a room when you're gone. Best to get the biggest cage you can afford, I think, and put her near your other birds so she has some company.

Are you going to have her vet checked and disease tested? If not, I would definitely recommend a 30-6o day quarantine from your other birds first, though.

100% with AD. They can be very destructive when left to their own devices. In fact destruction is what they do for entertainment. I used to let one of my toos roam the garage. She eventually chewed into the dry wall and exposed the beams! They also chewed the cable for the automatic garage door and a bunch of other things.
Now it's entirely possible this one won't because it's been chained up for a while but I think you're setting yourself up for a lot of broken things if you let it roam. If you had a corridor you could fully close off it might work but I'd still expect some sort of damage

Why would a cage be $1000?
We got a cage for our eckie in which a macaw can life really well,we even need to look were he is.
It costed €500.

the general idea seems to be that cage-less aint a good idea....i'll have to carefully rethink that then~

@hacatta: with long term considerations, i only buy stainless steel cages. i keep all my fids outside and bring them in at night! a powder coated cage will not last...trust me i speak from experience:) buying a ss cage big enough for a 'too will cost more than 1000, since i got my sun conure's cage for 1000+

Yann, I'm so glad you are trying to help this bird. I hope the store owners will quote you a reasonable price, and you can give this poor bird a better life. I agree with everyone else though, a cockatoo left alone and running loose will find many ways to self entertain but you probably won't like her methods. I don't know what to tell you about the cage. Stainless steel cages are ideal but maybe you could consider a large less expensive cage at least temporarily. Please keep us updated on what you decide to do.

so umm i called em to ask if she was for sale. i was told that it was his partner's bird and he would call me back with a price…

i mentioned that she was almost always out on the stand. he told me that it was part of the 'training' they were doing. apparently this fella is a lil' troublemaker, opens her own cage and goes around opening other fids cages too. they figured since they can't keep her in a cage, chaining her to a stand would work, and also to get her socialised since people walk by.

he also told me that by chaining her there she would learn how to 'self entertain'. i told him i understood his method. but honestly….that is NOT how to teach a parrot to self entertain!!!>< shouldn't it be by giving her more toys to destroy or foraging opportunities???

I know 1000 is alot of money but she is so very cute and i just read through all your posts and that just breaks my heart to see her chained up there. Cockatoo's will never ever learn to "self entertain " thats just funny ! they love people and they reallllly love their special person that they bond with. hope everything works out for you both .

That person's attitude is just unbelievable! First of all, she wouldn't be able to escape if she had a proper cage with PROPER locks (or, if she still opens that, augmented with padlocks or something). Second, chaining a parrot to ANYTHING is just abhorrent. Thirdly, having her on a stand where people walk by will NOT socialise her.

I'd hate to think that you give him any money at all, because he'll probably just do the same to another parrot, but at the same time... You can't change the life of every parrot, but you can change the life of that one parrot. And if it doesn't work out, you can find an owner that knows what they're doing and is prepared to give her a life long home. It's a lot of money, though, especially with a decent cage :(

i went down to see him today, yes apparently its a him and not her:54: have confirmed to bring him home next saturdayy!!!:D

i talked to the people there about this bird…and i get different stories from different people:confused: so i don't know which is the truth. its a long story so i won't bore you guys to death:09: but the general idea is that he's been abused and has only been at that place for about 4-5 months. different from what i heard over the phone conversation but its ok dosen't affect my decision.

But whenever they raise their hands or go near him…he gets really really scared. He shivers and flat out refused to step up for them[da guy eventually forced him to step up] funny thing is that after i spent about 5mins with him and of course the trusty sunflower seeds:p he stepped up for me!!! a bit hesitant but not too bad. so maybe…maybe he dosent like those people much?

also, he is very very desperate for food, being the sunflower seeds they use as treats. its not surprising though, since the guy did say that they use a 'trick diet' which is to restrict food intake to make da parrots food motivated. his main diet is zupreem fruit blend.

well i don't think the people there are EVIL though…they took the time to ask and make sure that i had experience with parrots and explained a lot on parrot training. although i can't say i agree with their training methods, seems a bit flawed to me.

anyway enough of my rambling and some pics of him. plucked at the back and under the wings but still a cutie. and oh yeah he's plucking is worrying me a bit…he plucked out a blood feather right in front of me:eek::eek:

We are looking for a bird for our family. It's very much like we are pregnant and waiting for the day the new addition comes to the family!
I can't wait to see the life you two will share! Thank You for taking in birdie. He deserves this break in life.
